Drivers who staff the MegaBus hub in Chicago are raising the specter of a strike, aiming to gain leverage in a contract dispute that revolves in large part around wages.
Stephen Sombrotto, president of the United Workers of America, the union whose Local 322 represents the Chicago MegaBus drivers, said most employees here make $15 per hour, substantially less than their counterparts in other locations, including drivers in New Jersey and Maryland, who earn $21.45 per hour.
The biggest issue is the wage, he said. In Chicago, the great majority of the people make $15. Chicago was the very first terminal in the U.S., and yet they've fallen behind everyone else.
The union counts around 140 employees in the MegaBus hub here. The work stoppage is scheduled to begin on Aug. 19, according to Sombrotto, unless both sides cut a deal or decide to keep talking.
