Gas Explosion Levels Part of Motel 6 in Washington State, One Hurt

Source: NBC News

A gas explosion reduced a large section of a Motel 6 to rubble and injured one person in Bremerton, Washington, Tuesday night.

A gas company worker was critically injured with second- and third-degree burns and had to be life-flighted to a hospital in Seattle, police said on Twitter. The man was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, a nursing supervisor told NBC News.

Firefighters on scene at the time of the blast were blown back nearly 20 feet, Bremerton Police said.

A gas leak was reported just before 8 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET). Motel workers and patrons were able to evacuate the motel just prior to the blast, which happened at 8:24 p.m., authorities say.

Reports of a gas leak at a Motel 6 in the 3400 block of 11th Street started coming in just before 8 p.m. Police say everyone at the hotel, including gas crews and hotel workers, were being evacuated at about 8:30 p.m. when the building exploded.

Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan said one employee of the Cascade Gas Company was critically injured in the blast. The worker was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns.

Several firefighters were on scene investigating the gas leak when the building exploded. Strachan said the firefighters "were blown back 20 feet," though none were seriously injured.

He said there are so far no reports of people being trapped in the rubble.

6. Update: 16 rooms destroyed in motel blast; no bodies found
Wed Aug 19, 2015, 07:33 PM
Aug 2015

Two people were unaccounted for after the explosion, but no bodies were found in the debris, Bremerton Fire Chief Al Duke said Wednesday.

"They're not here," Duke said, adding he was almost certain the missing guests were not caught in the explosion. Cadaver dogs went through the building two or three times and found no evidence of bodies. Plus, investigators pinged the cellphones of the missing people, and they showed up "way south of the area," Duke said.

He said the fast action of the Motel 6 manager and the people who listened to the fire alarm helped ensure the explosion Tuesday night was not a bigger tragedy.

8. Update: Heard police want to interview woman involved in domestic incident just before explosion.
Wed Aug 19, 2015, 08:21 PM
Aug 2015
Thirteen hotel units and a laundry room were leveled by the explosion, which occurred at 8:24 p.m. Tuesday, about a half-hour after a gas leak had been reported there.

Bremerton Police Department officers were already at the hotel, responding to a domestic violence incident, according to BPD Capt. Tom Wolfe.

One of the people contacted by police jumped out a window during their investigation. It’s unclear whether she may have hit the gas meter or line on the way down and ruptured it.

Shortly after that, the gas leak was reported and hotel employees pulled a fire alarm and evacuated guests.
