Banners at Va. college show parents where to drop off their ‘baby girl’ for ‘a good time’

At Old Dominion University, some new students and parents arriving at the Norfolk campus Friday were startled to find three huge banners hanging from a private off-campus house touting rowdy fun, with an arrow pointing to the front door labeled, “Freshman daughter drop off.”

(The next sign suggested, “Go ahead and drop off Mom too…”)

Signs offering "a good time" to ODU freshmen prompt outrage on social media, ODU response

NORFOLK

ODU President John Broderick said students could face disciplinary action after a photo of sexually suggestive banners welcoming freshmen women to Old Dominion University sparked a furor on social media Saturday.

The three signs at the house, which have been taken down, read: “ Rowdy and fun. Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time …”, “Freshman daughter drop off” with an arrow pointed to the front door and “Go ahead and drop off mom too …”
....

On Saturday afternoon, spray paint that matched the signs was visible on the driveway of a house in the 1500 block of W. 43rd St., presumably where the paint bled through the banners. The house, across the street from campus, appeared to be the same one pictured in the photograph that circulated on the web.

A man at the house Saturday who declined to be identified said the signs were never hung there. When a reporter pointed out the spray paint on the driveway, he admitted the signs were made there but insisted they were hung at a different house on the street. ... A half hour later, the wayward spray paint in the driveway was covered by plywood.

Binge drinking and sexual assaults are much higher in fraternities than in the general college population.

or some such - such a council has leeway to impose some consequences.

In addition, I would imagine that this kind of behavior could be easily construed to violate terms of the fraternity's charter and the student Code of Conduct.

with actions, not intentions. I don't know about others.

Most national charters aren't though police and only get involved if something illegal happens. Putting up an idiotic and tasteless banner that offended people is not illegal. . .if it were, I would want everyone with a Bush/Cheney, McCain/Palin, Romney/Ryan and whatever clown gets the GOP nod to be subject to the same shit.

In other words, it is unenforceable and could lead to a lawsuit against the university on free speech grounds.

I imagine most charters and student codes include a "you won't make us look bad" clause.

Old Dominion is a private university - it can do whatever it wants in response to this behavior and 'free speech' won't be relevant, since the Constitution only limits the government's ability to legislate speech. Being a student - or a fraternity - at Old Dominion is a privilege that can be revoked.

This is the kind of stuff you see in pretty much all the college/frat oriented movies and have for decades.

Some will see it as humorous

Some will see it as offensive

A lot won't really care
