Every North Carolina Senate Democrat Walks Out As GOP Senators Legalize Anti-LGBT Discrimination

Source: JoeMyGod

Every North Carolina Senate Democrat just walked out of the chamber rather than vote on the bill which legalizes anti-LGBT discrimination. The remaining GOP Senators then approved the bill 31-0. Having passed the state House earlier by a more than 3-1 margin, the bill now goes to the desk of GOP Gov. Pat McCrory, who will surely sign it.

UPDATE: Dominic Holden has more details at Buzzfeed.

House Bill 2 mandates that state law supersedes all local ordinances concerning wages, employment, and public accommodations. It would also restrict single-sex public restrooms and locker rooms in publicly run facilities to people of the same sex on their birth certificate.

It would also ban transgender students from school restrooms that correspond with their gender identity — teeing up a potential legal clash with the federal government, which has found civil rights laws ban transgender discrimination in schools.

Nine other jurisdictions in the state have ordinances similar to Charlotte’s. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, who could veto the bill, previously said the Charlotte City Council overreached with its LGBT ordinance. But his office has not responded to BuzzFeed News’ request to comment on the specifics of HB 2.

Wait, that's not small government at all!

Maybe the Republicans will realize their mistake...

This is a sad day for NC. We have so many problems that the legislature needs to address. But instead, they convene a special session to undue local anti-discrimination statutes, and prevent higher minimum wages too.

Sens. Diane Allen and Jen Beck in the Senate, as well as a handful in the Assembly that helped us pass marriage equality, the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights and a conversion therapy ban. While one Democrat, Sen. Ron Rice, was a thorn in our side with marriage equality.

But generally speaking, yes, the Republican party is rife with a wide variety of bigots.

The Republicans found a way to outlaw ALL local ordinances that were more progressive than the state-mandated discrimination. The "party of small government" just took away North Carolinians' rights to determine what laws we want in our own cities, towns, and counties.

They belong in jail, every last one of them for crimes against the citizens of North Carolina. They have violated the state and federal constitutions many times and put innocent people in harm's way for reasons that have NOTHING to do with responsible government.

This goes WAY beyond partisan political activity and into the realm of fraud and conspiracy to endanger those they do not agree with. They have injected their cruel and distorted brand of "christian" faith into places both constitutions banish religion from, like public safety, education, medical care and the voting booth.

That no one has pursued criminal investigations of what is clearly an administration and legislature shot through with crony favoritism, corrupt legislation, and outright bribery is a measure of just how little the DOJ cares about such issues, whether they occur in NC, Michigan, or anywhere else. Thanks a lot for NOTHING Mr. Holder and Ms. Lynch.

like most states where republicans rule, they need RW talk radio.

16 NC limbaugh stations that work for the NC GOP full time would take a huge advertising hit if these universities, North Carolina 8, North Carolina State 3, Duke 3, East Carolina 2, were protested because of their support for those stations.

it would scare the crap out of the GOP there- like all rw talk stations they are closely coordinated with the GOP and lay the groundwork propaganda for everything it does

I can see you don't live here. What is your point and why do you attack those schools? They have nothing to do with supporting the state GOP, or Limpdick or, the stations. I think you have something backwards about this formula you propose. The state schools cannot support private broadcasting by law. Duke is private but so far as I know has no formal affiliation with the NC GOP, or Limbaugh.

Exactly how do you draw the conclusion that those 4 schools are coordinating or colluding with 16 RW stations? Which stations are you talking about? How does attacking those universities change the criminal behavior controlled by Art Pope and the Koch Brothers?

Did you know that the state GOP is in the process of dismantling the UNC University system and turning it into Liberty State U, complete with religion classes and loyalty oaths?

the left ignores it.

those radio stations pay a small amt to a licensing company like learfield sports for the right's to broadcast their games, and learfield passes s some of that on to the uni.

How does attacking those universities change the criminal behavior controlled by Art Pope and the Koch Brothers?

those 16 stations are limbaugh stations and that means they are ALEC koch stations all day long and probably have been for 25 years at least, since they were bought up to form the 1200 station monopoly that now gives us trump and cruz as the loyal opposition.

at $1000/ hour(CHEAP) x 15 hrs/day x 16 stations, that's $62,400,000 /yr worth of pro koch infomercial time FREE, while flying the banners of those football and basketball teams - endorsed by them.

the GOP coordinates the programming on those stations. they use them to elect school regents and select or eliminate presidents/chancellors. it happens all over the country with 90 schools and 260 limbaugh stations at least.

those universities have no excuse for helping those stations on the completely apolitical and purely scientific survival issue of global warming alone. if students and communities even merely started the discussion of how fucking stupid those relationships are, advertisers would flee and the GOP would soon likely lose their most important weapon - by far.

over the last 2 months in nm i heard the local state blowharsds on the limbaugh megastation try to beat back two efforts to help fund public ed and a rapid transit project that would bring in 70 mil fed dollars and they did it while flying the UNM lobos banner.

it is fucking stupid for the left /dems to ignore that.

the schools have to get out of trump radio.

Limbaugh and RW radio when they do not directly do so. They don't advertise or present programs on those stations as such, in support of RW or not.

I think you have a point but you have the answer inside out.

You make it sound like the schools actively participate when they do not, nor do they advocate.

I think what you would like to say is that the schools should not license RW radio stations to allow them to carry sports events broadcasts. If that will work I think its a good idea. I am not sure that the schools can legally so regulate the way their sports broadcasts are sold, public accommodation being what it is.

It seems that promoting direct action against more conventional radio advertisers on RW radio has a stronger effect.

For this action to work as proposed there would need to be consciousness raising on and off campus and coordination among the schools.

Our schools need to rework their licensing contracts. If there is a penalty, perhaps donors can be found to make up the difference.

While you are at it we might want to get Limbaugh and other RW tools off of AFRN stations. That's the one that amazes me.

as long as the left ignores it it makes real democracy impossible as it can sabotage any fact based national discussion on any major issue. it is the main reason why we can't get any gun control progress after a bunch of first graders are massacred, for instance.

i disagree re the schools broadcasting on rw radio. it is stupid and very bad strategy for liberals and dems to allow their publicly funded universities to continue to allow their schools to rent their logos to donald trump to help him sell his facism and racism.

the schools have a 'brand', which they are protective of and use for commercial purposes. they also have mission statements, and the school image that they like to protect and project, the 'tradition', etc.

they make a lot of decisions based on those factors, to protect their brand and their image.

none of them would ever broadcast sports on a radio station that called itself a KKK station. if the KKK bought up one of the stations that was already broadcasting their sports, what would they do?

that's what happened shortly after reagan killed the fairness doctrine in 87 and the right started buying up radio stations for limbaugh and sons.

they don't wear hoods but they've used racism hate and lies for 30 years to sell the deregulation, voter suppression, war, and global warming denial that a normally functioning democracy would have made a lot more progress on.

every limbaugh station, without exception, sells/spreads global warming denial - a decision to declare that the next time the licensing agreement came up for renewal that the school would look for alternatives can not be characterized as a political or financial decision. protests and petitions toward that commitment from the school are a no brainer- its a matter of survival at least.

as far as it being a free speech problem- no it's not. money-wise, as i said, it is not in the schools interest to let their brand be used to help defund them.

politically, there's a conflict of interest continuing those relationships- those radio stations openly interfere in the selection of presidents and chancellors - i've heard it. the short llist comes out and so and so is way too liberal for us, etc. or elected regents.

most of the loudest stations in states were broadcasting games before they were bought for the modern KKK.

I just don't understand why they are so obsessed with who is using the women's bathroom

Really. Haven't any of these bozos ever traveled? Never used a unisex bathroom?

My hunch is that a bunch of them are nothing but perverts, getting their rocks off talking
about whether a penis might be seen in the women's room. And my husband, the shrink,
says, 'yes' they are afraid of losing dominance and power. They are afraid of the power
of the penis being diminished.

There is a sentiment expressed here from time to time that we shouldn't support Sanders mostly because he wasn't a "Democratic" Party guy throughout his career. How, the complaint goes, can we support someone who didn't tag a "D" after his name?

This is one reason why. If a Democratic voter and support measures like this, what is the value of that "D"?

As MLK said, people should be measured by their character, not by the color of their skin (or who they go to bed with). These clowns in North Carolina could not win elections without the support of "D"s.
