Requesting Pretrial Release, Manafort Lawyers Say He's Being Held In Solitary

To ensure his safety, Paul Manafort is being held in solitary confinement at a Virginia jail for at least 23 hours a day, his attorneys claimed in Thursday court filings appealing his pretrial detention. The attorneys argued that Manaforts confinement at Warsaw, Virginias Northern Neck Regional Jail made it effectively impossible for him to prepare for his two separate upcoming criminal trials.
The former Trump campaign chairmans bail was revoked in mid-June after he allegedly engaged in witness tampering while confined to house arrest. Manafort allegedly attempted to communicate with former business partners who helped coordinate his shady lobbying work in the Ukraine. A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., convened by special counsel Robert Mueller, subsequently indicted Manafort for the alleged witness tampering. He already faced charges including failure to disclose foreign lobbying, money laundering, bank fraud and tax fraud.

Appealing that ruling in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Manaforts lawyers said that Muellers team failed to provide sufficient evidence that their client engaged in obstruction of justice. His communications with his former business partners, they said, were extremely limited.
In its own Thursday filing, Muellers team opposed Manaforts request for the extraordinary relief he seeks. Prosecutors noted that both they and the district court have taken steps to minimize the impact on Manaforts trial preparation, offering to work with his attorneys on requests to house him in a more accessible facility. Mueller also said these difficulties were common to all defendants incarcerated pending trial.

(7,539 posts)I'm sure lots of criminals need time to do stuff that isn't conducive to the prison environment. I'm sure lots of children that are currently locked up would like to do things that don't involve being confined in a chain-link enclosure for 22 hours a day. Just because Manafort is white and rich doesn't make him in any way "extraordinary". He should have thought about the difficulty of preparing his upcoming trials while he was on house arrest before meddling with the witnesses in his case.

(43,364 posts)Yes, because he was trying to make initial contact so they could presumably concoct a coverup. It was through 3rd parties to try to escape scrutiny.
But if he had succeeded, it wouldn't have been so limited.

You either support our penal system, or you don't.
I don't.
It is cruel and ineffective.
Our penal system is barbaric !!!!!!!!!
Enjoy your rehabilitation.
