RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) A white man who challenged a black family's use of a gated pool in a North Carolina neighborhood has not only resigned from the homeowner's association board he's also lost his job.
Sonoco announced Friday that Adam Bloom is no longer employed by the packaging and industrial products company, saying it doesn't condone discrimination of any kind, even if it happens outside its workplace.
A video posted by Jasmine Abhulimen on Facebook on July 4, seen more than 4 million times, shows what happened after Bloom questioned whether she was allowed to bring her son to the pool in the Winston-Salem neighborhood.
Bloom also called the police. In a police recording released Friday, Bloom is heard calmly telling a dispatcher he's dealing with a "nonresident that's at the pool who refuses to leave. ... We're just asking for a form of identification."

(58,785 posts)a bit more reminiscent of the accountability people had in village societies. Far less safe anonymity in a metropolis of millions when everyone carries a camera and HR departments, colleges, licensing agencies, HOAs and social clubs, even neighbors, do searches on names. For better and worse.

Its happening again. This time, a Black doctor in Atlanta is upset at a white man who blocked her entrance to the gated community in which she lives because he felt she didnt belong there.
Dr. Nnenna Agoucha told WXIA that on June 18 the man racially profiled her when he blocked her from entering the Buckhead community where she has lived for nearly eight years.
A part of the nearly 30-minute exchange was captured on camera.
He is saying that I need to prove to him that I live here before he lets me into my own community, a frustrated Aguocha says in the video. He got out of the car and threatened to call the police on me because I was trespassing.

(129,662 posts)Officers then determined that Abhulimen did in fact have keycard access to the gated pool. An officer apologized to her. When Abhulimen asked Bloom for an apology, he walked away.
On Facebook, Abhulimen accused Bloom of racial profiling: "This is a classic case of racial profiling in my half a million $$ neighborhood pool. This happened to me and my baby today. What a shame!!" A police news release noted that the postings were on the page of Jasmine Edwards, which is Abhulimen's Facebook screen name.
The social media backlash was fierce, and soon targeted Bloom's employer. In a Twitter post , South Carolina-based Sonoco apologized to Abhulimen and said the situation doesn't reflect company values.

There is too much Clint Eastwood Hollywood-style "make my day" macho bullshit going on. Classic authoritarian.

Someday they may learn that PC means anti racist, misogynistic etc. imagine their shock when their actions still have consequences.

And these assholes STILL don't stop and think before displaying their racist selves in public and shooting off their goddamn, "entitled" mouths.

Might make him even worse.
But, the company does have a right to terminate at will for bad behavior. And clearly acted badly!

(82,383 posts)These Deplorables always blame others for their situation. He probably has guns. Ergo it just seems dangerous. Shame him sure, and try to make him better. But casting him out of society only gives him a motive to lash out at it. I believe this about felons too. If you are going to let them out of jail, making it impossible for them to get a job due to their record is just dumb and a recipe for re-offending.

I have no sympathy for him. He called the police on his neighbor. His behavior was repugnant.

(82,383 posts)because not every employer will pay attention to the internet and might not know why he lost the last one.
If it makes him less of a racist, at least out loud, then it would perhaps do some good.
Then there are those who might hire him because he is a racist - the opposite happened where that lady gave the Orange Dumpster the finger and lost her job due to that - people were figuring there were plenty who would want to hire her.
