North Carolina man awarded $8.8M from wife's boyfriend after affair

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) A judge says a Texas man's affair with a North Carolina man's wife should cost him nearly $9 million.
The Herald-Sun of Durham reports that Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson awarded Keith King $8.8 million in compensatory and punitive damages Thursday from Francisco Huizar III. King had sued Huizar for, among other complaints, criminal conversation and alienation of affection. North Carolina is one of a few states where jilted spouses can sue affair partners.
Attorney Joanne Foil says the affair and an alleged assault by Huizar cost King's company, BMX Stunt Shows, revenue and an employee, as his wife worked for the company. Huizar's attorney, Cheri Patrick, says the Kings' marriage was damaged before Huizar met the wife at a BMX show.
Patrick says King was controlling and manipulative.

(11,841 posts)Cynthia Shackelford's story could have been no different than that of any other aggrieved wife: The North Carolina woman, 60, thought her husband Allan was deeply in love with her. Then came his late nights at the office and suspicious charges on his credit card and cell phone bills. And finally, a private investigator confirmed what she had feared: Her husband, she said, was having an affair.
But Shackelford's story has a $9 million twist. Under centuries-old North Carolina case law, Shackelford sued her husband's alleged mistress, Anne Lundquist, for "alienation of affection," charging that the woman broke up her 33-year marriage.
Last week, Shackelford won. A jury awarded her $5 million in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages to be paid by Lundquist.

(61,715 posts)It's been around for decades. Efforts to repeal it fail because NC state legislators - who are mostly lawyers - find it lucrative to their private practices.
I agree that it's a ridiculous law, but it predates Trump.

(5,515 posts)A judgement is just that; a judgement. It is NOT a payout. The winning party needs to collect on their own so most of the time these things never get paid. Unless you can get a sheriff to start confiscating assets. Not always easy.

I am retired so I have all the time in the world to pursue things like this but I do and I will.

I had a similar situation when my parked car was hit and damaged. Sued and won, but it took three years to get reimbursed. Only reason I got paid was the suit was on the defendants credit report. They couldn't get a mortgage!!! Wa Wa!!
By the way, love the Marx Brothers!! I still crack up after seeing every one of their movies 500 times.
