Russia bans sale of gadgets without Russian-made software

Source: BBC

Russia has passed a law banning the sale of certain devices that are not pre-installed with Russian software.

The law will come into force in July 2020 and cover smartphones, computers and smart televisions.

Proponents of the legislation say it is aimed at promoting Russian technology and making it easier for people in the country to use the gadgets they buy.

But there are concerns about surveillance and fears that firms could pull out of the Russian market.

come on, guys. Put some effort into doing it more stealthy way so you can at least have some plausible deniability or whatever....

On a related note, I am finding the book 'The Perfect Weapon' by David Sanger to be interesting.

There is also an audio book for it on audible. Totally worth checking out.

where we promoted purchasing that helped the American job market.

The article's concerns about Russian companies pulling out, in effect makes room for any other Russian oligarch to move into that market. What the hell kind of businessman runs out on a near monopoly? - Oh wait, I remember one such idiot that bankrupted his own casino and managed to lose lucrative annual patronage from the PGA at his Florida resort. I guess it can be done.

Gadgets like iPhones and computers that people store personal information on that can be monitored by the govt, and American made cotton socks.

Basically the same thing, really.

As your desire to appear skeptical seems (ironically) a wee bit naive in regards to behavioral data used for analysis and sales in the marriage of US government and large commercial entities.

This is one thing Apple has never compromised on - preloading their products with crapware - whether from carriers or anyone else. They have compromised removing by software from local AppStores, but not adding it,not even Flash when it reigned supreme on the the web.

Windows and Android - no problem. Manufacturers load them with their own crapware, for a start.

EDIT: They did load Macs with Internet Explorer from Microsoft, prior to developing Safari.

... just like when the EU demands a free choice of browsers. And as somebody living in the EU, I am not more disturbed by possible Russian surveillance in Russia, than I am of US surveillance in Europe. More from the Big Brother companies misusing my data on a daily basis.
