Redskins to retire team name Monday; new name to be revealed later
Source: Washington Post
The Washington Redskins plan to announce Monday morning that they will change their team name, three people with knowledge of the situation confirmed Sunday night. The team is not expected to reveal a new name until a later date.
Mondays anticipated announcement comes after the organization released a statement July 3 saying it would be undertaking what it called a thorough review of the teams name; multiple people familiar with the process have said that it would result in the name being changed. In an interview July 4, Coach Ron Rivera who is working with owner Daniel Snyder to choose a name said he hoped the new name would be in place by the start of the 2020 season. Others have said it will be revealed as soon as within two weeks.
Two people with knowledge of the teams plans said Sunday that the preferred replacement name is tied up in a trademark fight, which is why the team cant announce the new name Monday.
Sports Business Journal was first to report Sunday night that the announcement of the names retirement would come Monday morning.

I just hope they don't stick with the Native American theme and try to become the Braves or the Warriors, or even a specific tribal name.
I am not Native American myself, so perhaps my thinking a tribal name, perhaps the Potomacs, wouldn't be a good idea. Maybe that would be just fine. However, something otherwise neutral that does recognize the geographic location would be good.

"Warriors" is a fine, meaningless, generic name that seems to offend nobody. So my money's on that name.

As of the posting of the FOX5 story in May 2015, McCaulay had registered for trademark protection on the following Washington-based names: Americans, Bravehearts, Federals, Forces, Founders, Gladiators, Monuments, Natives, Pandas, Pigskins, Red-Tailed Hawks, Renegades, Sharks, Veterans, and Tribe. McCaulay told FOX5 that he had spent $20,000 to secure the various trademarks.
A Sunday search conducted by PFT of the USPTOs public trademark database revealed that Phillip Martin McCaulay (it would be one hell of a coincidence if it wasnt the same guy) has recently filed applications for the following trademarks: Washington Redtails (July 7 and July 5), Washington Monuments (July 6), Washington Veterans (July 6), Washington Renegades (July 6), Washington Red-Tailed Hawks (July 4), and Washington Americans (June 18).
Other related trademarks applications have been filed in recent weeks by Richard Garrison of Los Angeles (Washington Braves, July 5); David Woods of Alexandria, Virginia (Washington Freedom Fighters, July 5), F1rst World Apparel of Santa Clarita, California (Washington War Hogs, July 5), Raymond Luchi of Santa Rosa, California (Washington Radskins, July 4), and David Howard of Rockville Centre, New York (Washington Potomacs, July 3).
Baseballs Washington Nationals claimed the name Washington Senators in 2008, per the USPTO database. Before the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals in 2005, the Washington Senators relocated to Texas and became the Rangers in 1972.

(24,350 posts)I pretty sure one of the reasons given by pro teams to change the names is that the team is stuck with reimbursing clothing makers for the stock they cannot sell
I think Charlotte or New Orleans (or both) had this issue
Maybe this has something to do with it
Or, what happens when they change the name?
Can other people sell items with the original logo and name?
One I know of comes from a small college that changed its name from Siwash to Prairie Fire.
Some people made shirts that read 'Old Siwash' and bore the original logo
The question was "Does the college still own all the rights or did they forfeit them?"

(30,785 posts)with Franken and Davis, where the Native Americans were the dominant culture? They were playing sportscasters. They announced team scores by teams like the Palefaces and Whities. They discussed how the white people were beginning to object to the bigoted team names. They just could not understand why that was a problem.

(25,929 posts)I also seem to recall that in that sketch they had teams with names that are also ethnic slurs. A while back I did a brief search for that sketch, but couldn't find it. I have a feeling that it simply isn't out there, because it would come across as extremely offensive today, even with the set up context.

(15,096 posts)It took all three minority owners trying to sell their stakes in the team but not being able to find buyers PLUS the stadium sponsor (a company founded by one of those minority owners) declaring that they'd take their name off the stadium irrespective of the contractual situation (because of pressure from hundreds of investment funds to their corporate board/executives). Plus the team desperately wants a new publicly funded/subsidized stadium but the public sentiment is way, way against that for numerous reason, amongst which -- and easiest to change -- is the racist name/theme.
Dan Snyder is an irredeemable P.O.S. He's doing the right thing, after decades of absolutely refusing to ever do so, only because he was forced to by just the right combination of pressures, i.e. for the wrong reason.

That way you can honor both Native Americans and the military. but the new mascot will be military-oriented. Also alliterative, and can be fit into the beloved R......s fight song. All the team has to do is work it out with the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
