Dr. Anthony Fauci on gun violence: 'How can you say that's not a public health issue?'

Source: CNN

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, acknowledged Sunday that gun violence in the US is a public health emergency.

"Myself, as a public health person, I think you can't run away from that. When you see people getting killed, in this last month it's just been horrifying what's happened. How can you say that's not a public health issue?" he told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" when asked if gun violence was a public health emergency.

Fauci's comments come after a rash of mass shootings in the past month. The US has suffered at least 45 mass shootings since March 16, when eight people were killed at three Atlanta-area spas, according to CNN reporting and an analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), local media and police reports. CNN considers an incident to be a mass shooting if four or more people, excluding the gunman, are wounded or killed by gunfire.

After a mass shooting at an Indianapolis FedEx facility that left at least eight people dead last week, Biden called the recent spate of mass shootings "a national embarrassment" and urged Congress to take action.

Yes, a public health issue in general and a mental health issue in particular. abqtommy Apr 2021 #2

In fact, we're just going to make it worse wherever the GQP has power. And we're not going to have a rational debate about it, either, because Constitution.

It's this simple: more guns = more gun deaths.

gun ownership would combat gun violence. It hasn't and as a matter of fact, in one case, when a victim tried to use his gun, got killed anyways by the shooter. What gets me is that the NRA / proponents of the 2nd amendment seem to defend the rights of shooters/murderers over the rights of innocent citizens. They (the NRA) can't even control the flow of guns to those that shouldn't have guns.

So much for defending American lives. What is the number of guns that we have to have in this Country, Mr. NRA, before the hand of justice starts swinging the other way (victims vs. shooters/murderers)? We have over 300 million guns now, is the number of guns recommended by the NRA 600 million? 900 million? What is the magic number, NRA? You can't answer because there is no reasonable answer. Did you always wonder why gun laws were passed in the wild wild West in the 'old' days? There were some pretty good reasons why.

The only reason why the NRA pushes guns is purely profit.
