RUTHER GLEN Hundreds of motorists have been stuck in the snow for more than 15 hours along a 50-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in Virginia after a crash involving six tractor-trailers, authorities said.
The Virginia Department of Transportation confirmed both directions of I-95 remained shut down between Caroline County and exit 152 in Dumfries, Prince William County.
The tractor-trailer collision Monday afternoon caused no injuries, but brought traffic to a standstill along the U.S. East Coast's main north-south highway, and it became impossible to move as the snow accumulated. Hours passed with hundreds of motorists posting increasingly desperate messages on social media about running out of fuel, food and water.
Crews will start taking people off at any available interchange to get them - for the southbound queue 143 (Garrisonville) and 140 (Courthouse) and northbound at exit 104 and exit 110. NB is 104 (Carmel Church) and 110 is Ladysmith," VDOT tweeted at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday.

I was just on this stretch a week ago and there always seems to be a slow down/stop there even without snow. UGH

(42,862 posts)U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, who lives in Richmond, said he remained stuck in his car 21 hours after starting his two-hour commute to the Capitol at 1 p.m. on Monday.
This has been a miserable experience, Kaine told WTOP. Traffic was so tightly packed that emergency vehicles struggled to remove disabled cars and trucks, he said.
Kaine described camaraderie among folks who were stranded, including a Connecticut family returning from a Florida vacation who walked up and down lines of parked cars sharing a bag of oranges they were bringing home. Still, spending the overnight hours in frigid weather was nervewracking, he said.
Darryl Walter, 57, of Bethesda, Maryland, was stuck on I-95 in Virginia for 10 hours as he drove home from a Florida beach vacation with his wife, 26-year-old son and dog, Brisket. For roughly five of those hours, they turned off their car to preserve gas until northbound traffic started crawling again.

We tried to "game" the situation on taking one of the 3 bridges that we felt was least traveled but it was usually bad.

(11,667 posts)A series of winter storms are wreaking havoc. Good news is that the snowpack in the mountains is way above average

(15,299 posts)almost 5 years ago to the day. A major winter snowstorm hit and there were accidents galore on the Turnpike which shut it down for the balance of the day and overnight. The Duquesne men's basketball team was on their way back from a game in eastern PA when their bus got stuck in the traffic jam.
