House Committee Takes Step Toward Potential Release of Trump's Tax Data

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — A House committee is expected to vote on Tuesday on whether to make public six years of former President Donald J. Trump’s tax records, in what would be a significant act of transparency in the waning days of Democratic control of the House.

The Ways and Means Committee gave notice on Friday that it would meet behind closed doors at 3 p.m. on Tuesday for what is expected to be a vote on whether to release some data from Mr. Trump’s tax returns from 2015 to 2020, including the possibility of sharing the filings. The panel obtained the information from the Treasury Department last month.

Such a vote, which Republicans are likely to oppose, would be the culmination of a nearly four-year battle stemming from Mr. Trump’s decision to break with modern precedent and refuse to disclose his personal financial information as a presidential candidate and then as a sitting president.

For now, lawmakers remain constrained by law about what they can say about the matter. Representative Richard E. Neal, Democrat of Massachusetts, who as the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee requested Mr. Trump’s tax returns from the Treasury Department, said it concerned “documents protected under Internal Revenue Code Section 6103.”

Also, why those years? Those are the most likely to have been sanitized.

Why not the five years from before he knew to clean up his filings.

This is a divisive issue, and will cause more partisan acrimony and Trump lawsuits.

for president. Voters have a right to know what kind of financial entanglements a president may have that would influence his decisions for the country.

This has got the slobfather crapping his pants. It's gonna be a looooooong weekend before he can get into a court on Monday to try and block any tax info being released.

I don't expect the info to be released "officially" but it's great to know the traitor is freaking out this weekend.

The Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TBOR) is a cornerstone document that highlights the 10 fundamental rights taxpayers have when dealing with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS wants every taxpayer to be aware of these rights in the event they need to work with the IRS on a personal tax matter. The IRS continues to publicly highlight these rights to taxpayers. The IRS also regularly reminds its employees about these rights. The IRS expects employees to understand and apply taxpayer rights throughout every encounter with taxpayers.

IRS Publication 1, Your Rights as a Taxpayer, includes a full list of taxpayers’ rights.

It includes The Right to Confidentiality.

Taxpayers have the right to expect that any information they provide to the IRS will not be disclosed unless authorized by the taxpayer or by law. Taxpayers have the right to expect appropriate action will be taken against employees, return preparers, and others who wrongfully use or disclose taxpayer return information.

If there is criminal activity reflected in the returns, they should be turned over to DOJ, and those returns, if appropriate, can be used in prosecution. If there is not, then there is no legitimate purpose for Congress to release them.

They aren't the ones that would be releasing them.

I suspect that copies will somehow be leaked anonymously to several of the top media outlets by someone on the congressional committee or staff.

Frustration after trying to get them for 4 years?, Making Trump and the RW angry? Vengeance ?

Based on the OP, the House is discussing on whether or not to make them public, so it sounds like there are some on the committee that are favoring it.

Not saying it should be done as there are potential legal & political perils. Just wouldn't surprise me if someone couldn't resist it & leaked them.
