NC Supreme Court strikes down voter ID constitutional amendment
Source: The Hill
Senate Bill 824 which was passed by the states Republican-controlled legislature in 2018 over a veto from its Democratic governor sought to implement a state constitutional amendment requiring photo ID to vote.
The court found that while the law appeared neutral on its face, it was enacted to target African-American voters who were unlikely to vote for Republican candidates.
In doing so, we do not conclude that the General Assembly harbored racial animus; however, we conclude just as the trial court did, that in passing S.B. 824, the Republican majority targeted voters who, based on race, were unlikely to vote for the majority party, the court said in its ruling in Holmes v. Moore.

(2,401 posts)This will be one of the last sane rulings from our state Supreme Court for several years. We just lost two Democratic seats on the court - and our majority - in the election this past November. We'll likely get a new districting case taken to back to this new NCSC and these clowns will rule in favor of the Repukes who run the state legislature. So, we'll be back to a severely gerrymandered federal congressional delegation of something like 11-3 most likely. 10-4 if we're lucky.
I hate 'em all.
