6.4-magnitude earthquake hits northern California
Source: NBC News
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Northern California early Tuesday, knocking out power for thousands. The quake hit at a depth of 10 miles just after 5:30 a.m. ET near Eureka in Humboldt County, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It struck around 7.4 miles west-southwest of Ferndale, the agency said. More than a dozen smaller earthquakes appeared to hit parts of the region afterward, it said.
It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured in the earthquake. More than 70,000 utility customers were without power in Humboldt County as of 8 a.m. ET Tuesday, according to the online outage tracker Poweroutage.us.
"Power is out across the county," Humboldt County's Office of Emergency Services said in a tweet, adding: "DO NOT CALL 911 UNLESS YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AN IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY."

(129,970 posts)and that was the first place I thought of when I zoomed in - how close that was (just south) of Eureka. A 6.4 isn't something to dismiss but I guess it depends on how deep it was and in this case, it was pretty shallow (~3 miles deep). Looks like a little swarm that extended off the coast towards the WNW - https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73821036/region-info

(26,323 posts)And since their house was in a on a corner with a roundabout, I was puzzled. Then my bed shook and I RACED to the living room and turned on the TV.
I even pulled a heavy quilt over my head, just in case the living room window crashed in.
She woke up, briefly, then rolled over and went back to sleep.
I have very vivid memories of each and every quake I experience while I was stationed in San Diego and while visiting in Glendale.
I'll try to get in touch, later, if she doesn't contact me first.

(129,970 posts)Here in Philly based on how the underlying rock structure was formed and has aged we strongly felt the 5.8 earthquake that originated down in central VA back in 2011. That literally radiated up the east coast. I was at work at the time at my desk working on my 'puter and all of a sudden the building started rocking and creaking (it was an old masonry brick/limestone block building) and my chair was literally moving forward and back, forward and back. Needless to say, our building was evacuated (I was on the 9th floor).
That quake damaged the Washington Monument down in D.C.
Because the east coast is much older than the "younger" still-forming west, the inter-connectivity of rock allows for the vibrations to cover a much larger area, which was pretty interesting to learn. Comparison by USGS -
Map showing where ground shaking was felt from the magnitude 5.8 earthquake August 23, 2011, near Mineral, Virginia, compared to the similar sized magnitude 6 earthquake September 28, 2004, near Napa, California. Stars show earthquake epicenters, and the blue and red dots show ground shaking reported from the public to the USGS "Did You Feel It?" website. (Public domain.)

(16,887 posts)Sometimes we feel quakes in North Bay that happen in that area - then again it was 2:30AM and most are sleeping and we are used to little shakes.
In California we fortunately also have construction that is focused on seismic integrity so there is little damage compared to other parts of the country or world with a quake this size.
Hope our fellow Californians up in that area are doing well and have minimal damage.
We had a 3.6 less than a mile from our house in the Eastbay at 3:40 am. It felt like it lifted the house up off the foundation, twisted it and dropped it back down all in two seconds. Took 15 minutes to find our new kitten after it and we have a small house. Loma Preada was a 6.9 in 89 so this one must have been pretty scary. Hope everyone come out OK, there's going to be a lot of clean up to do.

(129,970 posts)I figured there was no way to dismiss that considering that it was right off the coast and shallow (and then you have those aftershocks).
Hope you and yours can hang in there!!!!

(129,970 posts)and I remember being there with her watching the game when that hit! Almost 15 years later, I had a work training trip in San Francisco and was staying in a hotel near the Embarcadaro and as I recall, that used to have a raised highway that was in place above what is there now along the bay waterfront, and potions had collapsed after that 1989 earthquake, so the rest of the highway was removed.

My God!
There were black helicopters flying atop the City as the Marina district burned that night!
The next day we ventured to Polk Gulch to have lunch at Mayes Oyster House on Polk street. You'd had never know anything had occurred by looking at the clientele that day ...
Lombard street was a bumpy ragged mess!
I ventured north to where i am now. Still on the San Andreas fault!
Destiny no doubt as my gr-grandfather was in The Militia during the '06. That was ye old shoot to kill policy of that day for looting!

(129,970 posts)LOL I saw the (tony) Lombard (from the top of it) and it's normally like that.
When I was there, I marveled at doing my own "touring" of about 2/3rd of San Francisco via public transit.
Gotta stay clear of those faults but I guess you can't. True story but one of my sisters has a tiny (and active) fault at the bottom of her back yard where there is a creek. The houses on her side of the street run parallel with it.
