Afghanistan: Taliban closes universities to women
Source: BBC
The Taliban have announced the closure of universities for women in Afghanistan, according to a letter by the higher education minister. The minister says the move is until further notice. It is expected to take effect immediately. It further restricts women's access to formal education, as they were already excluded from most secondary schools.
Three months ago thousands of girls and women sat university entrance exams across Afghanistan. But sweeping restrictions were imposed on the subjects they could study, with veterinary science, engineering, economics and agriculture off limits and journalism severely restricted.
After the Taliban takeover last year, universities introduced gender segregated classrooms and entrances. Female students could only be taught by women professors or old men. Responding to the latest ban, one female university student told the BBC she thought the Taliban were scared of women and their power.
"They destroyed the only bridge that could connect me with my future," she said. "How can I react? I believe that I could study and change my future or bring the light to my life but they destroyed it." Afghanistan's education sector was badly affected after the Taliban takeover and there has been an exodus of trained academics after the withdrawal of US-led forces last year.

(33,449 posts)this is NOT coming "soon" to a school near you. women comprise the majority of college attendees in America and I don't expect that to change in the remaining 30 years I hopefully have left.
57% of the students at LIBERTY UNIVERSITY are women.
just let news about the Taliban be news about the Taliban, FFS.

(1,692 posts)Liberty U, Bob Jones U, Lynden Christian School, Mormon school in Rexburg where my daughter briefly attended and said the base rational for all study is their Bible. It is happening now. School boards are being populated by Christians all over the nation to control the school systems and what is taught in them. If the Christian Taliban get good control of Congress, you will be surprised at how quick it happens.
Thanks for your response. Have a good evening.

Different country, different Islam.

(8,814 posts)I am aware that they are different. But, the women of Iran are staging a revolution. This certainly could be making other Islamic states nervous and perhaps reactive.

(33,449 posts)the protests in Iran. They're not being reactive in that way.
They are banning women from university because that's what they did when they controlled the country previously - in the 1990s. Slowly tightening the screws, letting the facade of moderation drop as they drag the country backwards.

(14,179 posts)Its utter stupidity. The future of their country developing quicker, rebuilding, as well as contributions to medical doctors, and research and advancement in other industries etc... All that is cut in half by banning half of your population from higher education.

For the record I do not give a fuck what religious zealots say nor what lip lies service they pay, as I'm sure they don't care what an infidel like me says.
