Hochul nominates Judge Hector LaSalle to lead New York's top court, rankling progressives

Source: New York Daily News

ALBANY — Gov. Hochul on Thursday nominated Judge Hector LaSalle to serve as the next chief judge of the state’s highest court, rankling progressives who vowed to fight the appointment on the ground that LaSalle is too conservative.

If approved by the Democrat-led Senate, LaSalle would be the first Latino to lead the Court of Appeals and serve as head administrator for the sprawling statewide court system.

LaSalle is a Long Island native and former prosecutor who is currently the presiding justice of the state’s 2nd Appellate Division, which handles appeals from state courts in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

As Hochul’s Deadline Nears, Law Professors Urge Against ‘Activist Conservative’ for Chief Judge

As the deadline draws nearer, two camps within New York’s legal profession are dueling over one of the seven shortlisted candidates. A group of 46 law professors are urging Hochul not to tap Hector LaSalle, the head judge of a mid-level appeals court that covers parts of New York City and its suburbs. In a letter to the governor sent Monday, the professors condemn what they call LaSalle’s “activist conservative jurisprudence,” and warn that his leadership would “take our State’s law in the wrong direction.”

The letter highlights decisions that LaSalle signed onto curtailing investigations into whether an anti-abortion organization was engaged in illegal activity, allowing a large corporation to sue labor union leaders, and preventing a criminal defendant from appealing his conviction. LaSalle’s stance on abortion-related issues is particularly relevant in light of the United States Supreme Court overturning the constitutional right to an abortion earlier this year, the letter argues.

Since most of us out in the lesser parts of the country don't know NY politics but you do, intimately, what do you think about this nomination?

It's my impression that the Daily News is not widely known as a Democrat-friendly medium and the NY Focus site that's the source of your second excerpt appears to be populated pretty heavily by former denizens of The Intercept. So I'm not sure that I should take either take at face value.

Plenty of other papers running the same general story.

Waiting to hear from some Albany sources about his background./

Why is she nominating another right wing activist judge? Don't we have enough of them thanks to Trump and the out of touch with reality Federalist Society?

Why is she promoting such an awful judge?

This is very strange for a Democrat to do...........

I'll leave it there.

It's fun to see treasonous fatso45 almost self-immolate with his big mouth daily, as the rants, insane blathering and outright LIES over on Pinocchio Social

Anyway, let's not forget that if not for NY's fumbles in the way that they approached the Mid-term, Dems more than likely would have won the House. I digress. But ohhh weee, this shit storm about to head into DC in January 2023 named Boebert, Greene, and no spine McCarthy wouldn't have happened. But then again, maybe the country and world needs to see just how nasty, racist, treasonous, dishonest and ignorant MAGA is up close and personal, and on a DAILY basis. They won't get any legislation done, double down on anti-woke legislation, want to pass tax cuts for the rich and keep their fingers inserted in their anuses, because they don't care about their own voters, let alone about the rest of the country. All they seem as of late to really, really care about are things of a sexual nature. Sex, guns and God, dildos and butt plugs

I guess Self-described 'Christians' Greene and Boebert will educate us all about the evils of butt plugs, dildos, vibrators and other assortments of sex toys and sex-related acts. She going to show the world how she and her buddies voted against the anti-trafficking act? Maybe Greene will teach women how to be a serial adulteress and Christian simultaneously while married. Now that's what you call juggling. Is that the white nationalism she was talking about introducing the country to? As for escort, probably fetus murderer and self-described "christian" Boebert, is she going to teach women to have accidents in cars then flee the scene of the crime, or how to stand by your man even though he is a sexual predator and on a sex offender list. Wowzer, I almost forgot about escortin' and such. Did somebody say pedio? Oh yeah, I forgot about Gaetz who I hear is NOW mad as hell with his former bestie traitor Greene who he jetted around the country with as both were literally thick as thieves. Can't wait to see that shit storm between those two degenerates, and the man leading the judiciary committee who more than likely will be indicted Gym Jordan, who new that the team doctor was sexually assaulting the wrestlers on the wrestling team at theOhio State University that he was manager of. ALL of these treasonous asses have the goods on each other, and let's not forget that they have a wafer-thin majority in the House as it is, and some of those treasonous asses may have to leave the House due to their involvement in January 6th.

Heck, I forgot about Mr. Slinky Spine Kevin ‘It will be hard not to hit’ Pelosi with gavel if he becomes House speaker' McCarthy, who might not even be the Speaker of the House, because he doesn't have the votes as of yet.

Oh Jack ......

Or she is covering some bases for any litigation against her schemes. I only know about some scammy land grab around Penn Station she championed after Cuomo started it. It's a total scam to claim a vibrant block is 'blighted' and put in unneeded extra tracks and huge office towers, when there is already excess capacity. She is still at it after the developer said no way after the interest rates hiked over the summer.

I pray we get campaign finance reform and some kind of ranked choice for primaries or approval voting for the primaries. so we can vote for all the progressives and try and get some through.
