Steve Bannon sued for nearly $500,000 in alleged unpaid legal bills
Source: NBC News
A law firm that represented former Trump adviser Steve Bannon is suing him for nearly $500,000 in unpaid legal bills.
In a lawsuit filed Friday in New York state court, law firm Davidoff Hutcher & Citron alleges that Bannon has an outstanding bill of more than $480,000 for legal services it provided from around November 2020 through November 2022.
This action simply seeks payment of an outstanding bill for legal services rendered in the amount of $480,487.87 in addition to scheduling a hearing on the reasonable attorneys fees DHC is contractually entitled to as the prevailing party in this litigation, the firm's lawsuit says. NBC News has reached out to Bannon for comment.
The law firm represented Bannon in some high-profile cases, including when he was subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack in the last Congress and his subsequent trial for defying the subpoena. Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress last year in that case and was sentenced to four months in prison; he is appealing the conviction.

(15,225 posts)Its one of three things:
Either the attorneys think they will benefit from the press they receive from taking the case in ways that would outweigh their fees;
The attorneys really believe that they can figure out a way to get paid when no others have managed to receive full payment; or
The attorneys are just plain stupid.
I go with the third option and like you, have no sympathy for them at all.

(10,131 posts)They need to get their money up front.
Trump lawyers for the classified docs case got a $3 mil retainer (according to what I read).
The legal services stop when the retainer runs out.

(5,809 posts)Will this be a topic on his podcast? I'm sure he has a good explanation.
OTOH, anyone stupid enough to listen because they rely on this guy to tell them what to think is dumb enough to believe whatever Scrofulous Steve spews forth.

(130,368 posts)Defendants have a "right" to counsel in certain states for CIVIL cases as well.
Had to dig but this was filed in NY state. NY has limited rights for counsel for civil cases but usually for any such appointments, it is aimed at indigent defendants. A good discussion on that concept (and for what types of cases and why) is here - https://www.nysenate.gov/newsroom/articles/expanding-gideon-right-indigent-civil-representation
