Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman discharged from hospital
Source: CBS News
Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has been discharged from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, his office announced Friday. Fetterman had been undergoing treatment for clinical depression at Walter Reed since checking himself into the hospital in February at the recommendation of the attending physician of the U.S. Congress.
"I am so happy to be home. I'm excited to be the father and husband I want to be, and the senator Pennsylvania deserves. Pennsylvanians have always had my back, and I will always have theirs," Fetterman said in a note posted on Twitter by his director of communications. "I am extremely grateful to the incredible team at Walter Reed. The care they provided changed my life.
I will have more to say about this soon, but for now I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works. This isn't about politics -- right now there are people who are suffering with depression in red counties and blue counties. If you need help, please get help."
Fetterman shared his struggle with depression, his health and more in an intimate interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley, to be broadcast Sunday, April 2 on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

I'm glad he is better.

(10,322 posts)the average Joe is not going to get a month and a half in the hospital for nonsuicidal depression. He's lucky if he gets an outpatient appointment in a month and a half. I cringe when I here about Fetterman's experience, because it is not in any way indicative of the way things work for the rest of us. It's more the way things SHOULD be.

(30,150 posts)I hope the senator serves as a good example to those who need help but are reluctant about seeking it.

(16,763 posts)When compared to his swearing in photo, you can tell he's put weight back on.
The story in the Post-Gazette says the cardio meds he was on may have contributed to low blood pressure that exacerbated things. Those meds have now been adjusted (I inferred changed to a different drug, lowered or maybe even some were dropped altogether). The article also says the Fetterman hadn't been eating or drinking much.

On a side note, it just infuriates me that in our health care system, doctors just prescribe drugs to treat symptoms to get to some "nornal" number for blood pressure, etc, but have little to no idea what is "normal" for the actual patient. Thankfully, the doctors at Walter Reed know what they're doing.

I really think that the whole field needs a complete overhaul. You often end up with people, who in a physician's sadistic quest to force-fit a "120/70" on them, become so weak and lethargic that they not only experience dizziness and light-headedness, but can lose their balance, resulting in a higher incidence of falls, etc.
