Omaha Central High students walk out of class to protest trans youth bills

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Lauren Wagner Mar 31, 2023 Updated 6 hrs ago

As many as several hundred students at Omaha's Central High School braved dropping temperatures Friday and walked out of class to protest two pending bills in the Nebraska Legislature.

Armed with bright, colorful signs and a microphone, students used speeches and poetry to protest Legislative Bills 574 and 575, which focus on transgender youths. Both bills were introduced by State Sen. Kathleen Kauth of Omaha.

The Central students were joined by others, including parents, young children and community members, to hear a number of student activists talk about the potential impact of the bills.

Several students said the legislation would prevent transgender youths from accessing lifesaving medical care and limit how they participate in sports or the bathrooms they can use.

Central High's walkout was just one of many events that occurred Friday as thousands of people across the country rallied to support the rights of transgender people on Transgender Day of Visibility.

Several comments on the story at link. Also a good video.

They are too young to have been indoctrinated by incessant political propaganda that’s captured a great many of their elders.

I’m one of those elders and very few of my peers think like me. If it is left up to them, humankind is finished. They just can’t say “no”.

All of those wannabe dictators in the GQP cannot stand for anyone to not bow when they enter a room, so you can be assured that those red states are going to retaliate against this. In a major way.

It would be hypocritical of me to teach the Bill of Rights and not join my students in exercising those rights.

Republicans have proven that there is no low to how far they will stoop to hurt and punish people just for being different or having different beliefs. They claim to be Christian but lack any love for their fellow humans their religion demands, so they’re actually nothing but hypocrites.

Violent, murderous intolerance, at that. Even towards each other. Ask the Cathars about that one. Oh. Wait. You can't, because Christians mass-murdered and tormented them into oblivion back in the 13th century.

And that's not counting the way they've treated people who weren't part of their faith since their founding. Especially Jews. Ask the Tribe sometime about how that "love their fellow man" has played out for them. Enough Jews have managed to stick around to tell their side of that particular claim.

So now I'll wait for the gaslighting about how I'm the mean one, the intolerant one, for pointing that out. It comes just as quickly as white women crying when their racism is called out by a brown person. The powerful and privileged always jump right into DARVO whenever someone points out their less than stellar behavior patterns, as sure as the dusk follows the dawn.

DARVO is:

Deny
Attack
Reverse
Victim and
Offender.

So have at it. I'm used to it by now.

realize I was a Democrat. I remember being in my early 20s, having zero interest or knowledge of politics or political parties. Then I saw the constant news coverage of Clinton's impeachment over a blowjob. I saw repeated panicked voices saying that this will ruin the US, make us weak among other countries, the worst crime or scandel to have ever hit America!!!1!11!.

And I thought, who are these fuckers with their overly dramatic takes on a simple blowjob! Republicans! that was it, and can't stand them ever since!

Listen carefully. Ask questions. Find answers. Learn. Speak up. Unite. Help.
Repair the world.

You’re doing good work, good trouble as Brother John Lewis instructed us.
I’ve got your back.
You have my support.

I am a teacher and a librarian, retired now.
I spent ~40 years in public schools and libraries and teachers’ unions (local, state and national).
My daughter attended public schools, and came with me to years of teacher union meetings and actions. After my first miscarriage, and later the birth of my daughter, it came to me that all children are my children. I am grateful to have my one and only daughter, and I have dedicated my life to supporting all the children in this world in any ways I’m able.

I’m proud of these young people. They bring hope that we can reclaim a better world for all of us.
