Tuberville says he doesn't know if inner city teachers 'can read and write'
Source: The Hill
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said on Thursday that he does not know whether inner city teachers can read and write.
In a Thursday appearance on Donald Trump Jr.s podcast, Triggered, Tuberville took aim at the public school system in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that he does not know how teachers in the inner city received degrees, pointing to a recent report that said 23 schools in Baltimore City do not have any students proficient in math.
The COVID really brought it out how bad our schools are and how bad our teachers are, in the inner city, Tuberville said. Most of them in the inner city, I dont know how they got degrees.
I dont know whether they can read and write. And they want a raise. They want less time to work, less time in school, he said. Its just, weve ruined work ethic in this country. We dont work at it anymore. We push an easy life.

(38,427 posts)Actually, It is hard to tell sometimes. Teaching in the inner city was a long, long time ago. .......
Maybe the problem isn't the work that I did in the inner city, maybe the problem is the "O" word.
I don't like to even say the "O"word.
......................But the "O" word has to do with aging and growing more..".MATURE"

(1,654 posts)As a college football coach, he isn't exactly a fan of education anyway. So many of the "winning" college coaches discourage athletes who want a real education from taking difficult courses. They pressure them into the easiest courses to keep them eligible. Education be damned. How many of his players actually graduated with degrees?

(36,055 posts)donors' corporate messaging about stigmatizing public education professionals. (btw, Alabama and the rest of the entire South never even had public schools until the Reconstruction. All schools were for the rich, with even white poors and workers denied schools.
Tuberville validates the confederate secessionist racist sickness.
American public education has produced our presidents, astronauts, scientists, mathematicians, architects, skilled workers, engineers, artists, film makers, musicians, university and governmental leaders.
After the Powell Memo & corporate Raygun, the rich's formula on how to break down American institutions (from the FBI to border agents to education) became:
Defund
Deform through "Reform"
Stigmatize
Privatize
Racists like Tuberville spread the rich's divide-and-conquer script of distrust toward fellow citizens who are both parents and teaching professionals.
Tenured professionals of any medical, legal, architectural or other profession, do NOT produce a Return On Investment that states' investment in public schools do.
America's public schools produce an ROI ratio of 7:1 -- $7 return for every $1 invested.
When Tuberville oozes vile racist stereotypes about "inner city" professionals of the last standing Jeffersonian, democratizing institution of human development for this country, he simply promotes his donors' goals toward keeping the rich free of educated competitors. Like them he doesn't care about the nation's greatest assets, its people.
He's a rule of men guy. Corporate media are right there to lap it up.
We have to stop gazing at trainwreck news.

(54,379 posts)I still demand that all members of Congress be forced to take the same citizenship test that prospective immigrants have to pass before being allowed to become U.S. citizens. Passing grade is 90%, random questions, and no "extra credit" given.
If they fail, the runner-up in the last election that put them into office gets the chance to take the test, and take office. If neither can pass, a new election is held, with neither of the two failing candidates being allowed to be on the ballot. If the state can't find a candidate willing to run in a primary who can pass he test, then that state/district is denied the chance at representation for the period of office for which the election was held. You want to be represented in the US government, that entails certain responsibilities. Sending ignorants like Tubverville to the US Senate is an abdication of that responsibility.

(14,904 posts)From the New York Times via Cincinnati Enquirer:
Asked about the hedge fund venture on the campaign trail in February, Mr. Tuberville described himself as an investor like the rest of them, much as he had in media reports at the time of the accusations.
They sued me because I invested in it, and he used my name to get other people to put money in, he said. There was nothing ever implicated by anybody that Id done anything wrong. I felt bad that he used my name.
But a review of public court records shows that he had a broader role. While he was not picking stocks, or even a frequent presence in the office, Mr. Tuberville made introductions to potential investors, had business cards identifying himself as managing partner, and leased a BMW and got his health insurance through the company. Its offices in Auburn were filled with his coaching memorabilia. In 2010, he traveled to New York with Mr. Stroud to meet potential brokers for the fund, and was kept in the loop on decisions about hiring, according to email traffic.
In a statement, Mr. Tubervilles lawyer and campaign chairman, Stan McDonald, said his clients involvement in the company was a big mistake, and hes paid for it.
Coach Tuberville was as surprised as anyone to learn Stroud had lost all the money, including Coachs. He never received a dime; it was a dead loss for him and his family, Mr. McDonald said. The Lord humbles us on many occasions, and this was such a moment for Coach.

(2,199 posts)I teach in a title one school and the majority of the 100 plus faculty members have Master Degrees in their field. Four or five of our teachers have PhDs in their field. My undergrad degree was in Social Studies Education, Masters in Social Studies Education, then courtesy of Uncle Sam I received a 2nd Masters in Military Management and finished with an Army War College Masters in Government and Strategy. Guess I'm saying you are a fucking idiot. Tell us how many of your football players could read and write above a 6th grade level. Typical Republican, just stay the F away from public education, we have enough problems in public education without your2cents worth.
