A Tulare man was sentenced on Friday to 300 years in prison for molesting a group of children in the late 1990s.

Steven Brian Arey was convicted in April on 20 counts of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14, according to a statement from the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office. Each count carried the special allegations of “substantial sexual conduct” and being “committed against multiple victims,” the DA’s office said.

Each count was a felony and considered a strike offense.

The majority of the crimes took place over a period of six years beginning in 1996. The victim was a boy between 7 and 13 years old at the time.

I'd bet there were no drag shows in his church, so parents felt kids were perfectly safe. . . . nt Bernardo de La Paz May 2023 #6

I saw a couple shows in the quarter in NOLA a long, long time ago. Entertainers to the max. And children have no need to be afraid.

If I may add one to your list. Men who work for the Boy Scouts.

to them like ants to sugar. These organizations need to thoroughly vet everyone who works for them.

I used to be a volunteer for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. I had to provide 4 written references (which were each checked), have a police background check done, take a psychological exam to rule out behaviors or disorders that would be considered harmful to children, and have a one on one interview in my home with the local director of the program.

Church employees and volunteers, Scout leaders, coaches - anyone dealing with children - should go through a similar vetting process.

They can be lenient, but this guy’s in his 50s at least so will probably die before he’s eligible for a parole hearing.

It's easy to forget how many of the men behind bars are fathers. They don't take kindly to child molesters. Even if they put him in protective custody, I wouldn't place long odds on his long-term survival in the joint.
