Chinese Gate-Crashers at U.S. Bases Spark Espionage Concerns Washington has tracked about 100 incide
Source: WSJ
WASHINGTONChinese nationals, sometimes posing as tourists, have accessed military bases and other sensitive sites in the U.S. as many as 100 times in recent years, according to U.S. officials, who describe the incidents as a potential espionage threat.
The Defense Department, FBI and other agencies held a review last year to try to limit these incidents, which involve people whom officials have dubbed gate-crashers because of their attemptseither by accident or intentionallyto get onto U.S. military bases and other installations without proper authorization. They range from Chinese nationals found crossing into a U.S. missile range in New Mexico to what appeared to be scuba divers swimming in murky waters near a U.S. government rocket-launch site in Florida.
The incidents, which U.S. officials describe as a form of espionage, appear designed to test security practices at U.S. military installations and other federal sites. Officials familiar with the practice say the individuals are typically Chinese nationals pressed into service and required to report back to the Chinese government.

Need to crack down on tis shit. NONE of these incidents are "accidents". Jail time is needed at the very least. China is probing everything they can.

(6,963 posts)If for no other reason than it's a one off "emergency" report which provokes fear and, its next step, hatred for an "other".
The US media, especially, the interwebs is at least half propaganda of one kind or another. Sun rose in east this am.

(2,600 posts)I realize there some bases/installations where there's a small civilian component who come and got, but they've usually been issued passes and must show ID or their clearance cards. Why would military personnel at the gates allow random people of any description within the checkpoints?
Hieronymus Phact
(372 posts)I used to be a civilian contractor. There is a huge civilian population that comes and goes daily from all sorts of military bases. From electricians and other construction workers, to computer programmers, IT Support staff, scientists, secretaries etc. Then there is the civilian population of spouses and children living on post in residential areas, complete with nice suburban neighborhoods and school bus service. These bases have extensive recreational facilities: golf courses, swimming pools, rec halls, even skeet shooting ranges, that are all open to the public. -as long as you go through the security system. They also have hotels for service people.
Before 9/11 you could just drive on to many bases without even a checkpoint. I was working on a base when the towers and Pentagon were attacked, and everything changed.
They have their own fast food places, gas stations, and shopping beyond the simple PX, all with a civilian workforce. The Pentagon has a shopping mall inside. Bases have their own police and fire departments. It's like a small self-contained city.

(6,054 posts)But they are not open to the public. You can tour the building, but it's guided and controlled, and as far as I know there's no opportunity for tourists to shop.

(6,054 posts)The Pentagon hasn't been open to the public since long before 9/11. The first time I went in, for a job interview, I used my Reserve ID card to get in, and didn't need a visitor badge. You certainly can't do that now.

(81,870 posts)Suspected Chinese spies, disguised as tourists, tried to infiltrate Alaskan military bases
Tom Vanden Brook
USA TODAY
ANCHORAGE, Alaska Chinese citizens posing as tourists but suspected of being spies have made several attempts in recent years to gain access to military facilities in this vast state studded with sensitive bases, according to U.S. officials.
In one incident, a vehicle with Chinese citizens blew past a security checkpoint at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, several soldiers told USA TODAY. The vehicle was eventually stopped, and a search found a drone inside the vehicle. The occupants claimed they were tourists who had gotten lost.
Many of the encounters have been chalked up to innocent mistakes by foreign visitors intent on viewing the northern lights and other attractions in Alaska, officials say. Other attempts to enter U.S. military bases, however, seem to be probes to learn about U.S. military capabilities in Alaska, according to multiple soldiers familiar with the incidents but who were not authorized to speak publicly about them.
Not all who appear to be tourists in Alaska, are, in fact tourists, one Army officer said. Instead, they are foreign spies.

(12,619 posts)but this is for those that can see this, so here goes,
The one constant with you and a couple of other DU members is that any time a negative thread or post is rendered here, concerning China, you automatically either jump to China's defense or you attempt to deflect from Chinese aggression by blaming the US or NATO for all the world's problems.
Makes one go, Hmmmm, what is your true agenda here with regards to China, and for that matter, all the other tyrant leaders of nations opposed to the US, you do seem to support them over the US.
So, be honest, what is your true agenda here?
