Six French teens convicted over their roles in an Islamic extremist's killing of a teacher

PARIS (AP) — A French juvenile court on Friday convicted six teenagers for their roles in the 2020 beheading of a teacher by an Islamic extremist, an attack that shocked the country and shone a light on the real-world dangers of online hate speech.

Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, was killed near his school after showing his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a debate on free expression. Attacker Abdoullakh Anzorov, a young Chechen who had become radicalized, was killed by police.

The court found five of the defendants, who were 14 and 15 at the time of the attack, guilty of involvement in staking out the teacher and identifying him for the attacker. The sixth defendant, 13 at the time, was found guilty of lying about the classroom debate in comments that aggravated online anger against the teacher.

After the ruling, the six defendants left the courtroom without speaking. Some had their heads down as they listened to the verdict. One appeared to wipe tears.

6. It's not communism vs. religion

Conflating communism and atheism is a mistake. Saying religion is evil does not mean saying communism is not evil. I do not agree with the posters attacking religion, but I do understand their complaint. Murdering to avenge an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent being is simply stupid. It is blatantly unnecessary. Moreover, the destructive nature of religiosity is legitimate. It has nothing to do with communism and everything to do with the violation of the precepts of virtually all religions. Christians who do not recognize this have lost their way.

9. I have the utmost respect for Christopher Hitchens.

The point is 20th Century Marxism-:Leninism was an atheist religion that killed as many people as any in history. Lenin, Stalin, and Mao were godheads. With the exception of North Korea, that particular doctrine has died out, and good riddance, but it is not true that ridding the world of organized religion would stop the carnage.

16. I agree that ridding the world of organized

religion wouldn't stop the carnage... you have to delve deeper than that. Or, maybe it's not dig as deeply? I'm convinced if we struck down the patriarchy and had more female leaders, things would not be quite as bad. I say "quite as bad" because, obviously, you have some pretty screwed up women, as well. But even they are not driven to kill in fits of testosterone rage. The world has to move on from "competition" to "cooperation" and I just don't see that happening as long as men are the ones in charge. The drive to always have the most, even if it has to be stolen, is too strong... especially in the sociopathic and narcissistic personalities that seem to haunt the halls of power.

Women are not the answer to all of the world's ills... but I'd lay odds we'd do a damned sight better than what we've had to live with for all these millenia of male dominance. Not a lot is known... or has been lost... about female civic leadership before the age of Monotheism. Everything that is imagined is in the form of Viking warrior women or Amazons. These are male fantasies writ large, IMO. While it may be that tech progress may not come as fast and furious as it does under male competitiveness, it would happen, but I think with more cooperation and compassion than we see in today's world.

Just my opinion. I'm never going to live to see it. And for that, I weep.

to kill. Xtianists today do it the really dirty way -- they have the courts decline to hear abortion cases, or make laws that actually go against life. Declining food stamps, etc., is just a slow motion death sentence. Xtianists hide. Jihadists are right out in the open. I don't want to deal with either of them, but here we are. And, as time moves forward on this present timeline, I would not take any bets against the Xtianists turning Jihadi in their own time. After all, once you really stop to consider it, women are now ruled by a form of Sharia law right here in America. Soon to be coming to everyone, unless the Dominionists and other theocrats are stopped.
