N.J. congressman Donald Payne Jr. dies

Source: nj.com

U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., a former Newark councilman and a member of a New Jersey political dynasty who spent the last 12 years representing a heavily populated swath of the state in Congress after succeeding his late father, died Wednesday.

The Essex County Democrat, who had been hospitalized for weeks after suffering a cardiac episode related to his ongoing diabetes, was 65 and still in office.

A relatively soft-spoken but gregarious politician who fought for social justice and transportation funding, Payne was in his sixth term representing New Jersey’s 10th congressional district — which includes Newark, the state’s largest city — in the House of Representatives.

Payne, then Newark’s council president, was elected to the seat after his father, Donald Payne Sr., New Jersey’s first Black congressman, died after 23 years in office.

everyone is talking about it, as he is our rep. They redistricted about five years ago, I think, and that's when he became our rep.

He would frequently appear at our teacher's union meetings. He told about his family, which was very involved in education:

Payne grew up with two sisters in Newark, where his father was a teacher before launching a career in politics that included stints as an Essex County freeholder and Newark councilman.

I had always wanted to get him to come visit our school/community gardens. Last time I saw him, he addressed the group only about 10' away from where I was sitting.

Still trying to wrap my head around this.
