Cuba offers paid time off for workers to see pope
HAVANA Cuba's communist government is making it easier for citizens to see Pope Benedict XVI during his visit this month.
The government Labor Ministry says state workers in Havana and Santiago will get paid time off to attend papal events during the pope's March 26-28 trip to the Caribbean island. The pope will come to Cuba after visiting Mexico.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party newspaper Granma says Saturday that the capital's main airport terminal will be reserved for the papal trip. All other flights will be shifted to other terminals.

I'm not sure if it's ever been mentioned on DU before, but he used to be in the Hitler Youth.

(42,239 posts)Welcome to His Holiness Benedict XVI.
ON Monday, March 26 the Cuban people will warmly and respectfully receive Pope Benedict XVI, Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church and head of state of Vatican City, as a guest of the government and the Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Cuba is honored to welcome his Holiness with hospitality and demonstrate the patriotism, culture, solidarity and humanist vocation of its people, which sustains the history and unity of our nation.
We will also welcome, with our characteristic friendship, the thousands of pilgrims present for what doubtless will be highly memorable days.
Fourteen years ago, with the same sentiments, the Cuban people received Pope John Paul II who, before leaving, spoke of "the profound impression" his stay made on him and gave thanks for the "cordial hospitality, a genuine expression of the Cuban soul."

(I was there in November 2011 and met representatives of three different groups: Episcopal, Roman Catholic, and Jewish.)

(123 posts)With his beard and all, Castro has the look of the old testament prophets. Incidentally, he was raised as a catholic and has not shied away from his roots. Some of his quotes have revealed a belief in Christ!
While I am incorrigibly American in my lifestyle and aspirations, I am objective when observing the course of human events.
Castro, has acted more like Christ in regards to his people than the oligarchs have in regards to the US population.
