While blocking presidential nominations is not new, the case of Roberta Jacobson, currently serving as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere, is becoming a classic in Washingtons politics of bipartisan bickering.
An expert on Mexico, fluent in Spanish and a key negotiator in the re-establishment of diplomatic ties with Cuba, Jacobson was nominated by President Barack Obama to become Ambassador to Mexico in June 2015.
In choosing Ms. Jacobson, 53, a Mexico specialist who rose through the ranks of the State Department
Mr. Obama turned to a trusted official with allies in both political parties whose résumé seems tailor-made for the post, wrote The New York Times.
Six former American ambassadors who served under Democratic and Republican presidents sent the Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee a letter urging the committee to confirm Jacobson promptly, saying her qualifications, experience, and integrity are beyond reproach. In November, the Committee did just that in a vote of 12-7.
