GOP Senator Rand Paul's religious litmus test for public service should alarm us all
Dilawar Syed, President Bidens pick to serve as deputy administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), is obviously qualified for the job. Hes had a successful career as an entrepreneur running software, health care and artificial intelligence companies.
As the U.S. Chamber of Commerce noted in their endorsement of his nomination, Dilawar Syed has an impressive background as an entrepreneur and understands the operational challenges of scaling a start-up to meet increased market demand. The National Small Business Association has also backed his nomination, stating He has faced the real-world struggles of growing a new venture, and he has also served a client-base made up of small businesses, learning what they need and how best to serve them.
Small businesses across the commonwealth, in particular, would benefit from Syeds leadership as the number two person at the SBA. Yet our senator, Rand Paul the top Republican on the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship is leading a boycott of Syeds nomination.
-snip-
It appears that Sen. Pauls opposition is not based on Syeds business credentials, but rather on Syeds faith. If confirmed, Syed would be the highest-ranking Muslim American official in the Biden administration.
