With the departure of Melissa Harris-Perry, MSNBC is one step closer to becoming the pro-corporate mouthpiece that theyve dreamed of since the day Comcast took over. The few remaining hosts with a conscience could be on the chopping block soon, and the only way to fight the corporate power over the media in this country is to simply change the channel.
Ring of Fires Farron Cousins discusses this.

(1,115 posts)And I kind of like "change the channel" from the original post.
I'm still trying to follow Cenk. And I watch for big Ed. I am now
a fan off Melissa (I didn't give her enough time before, but I did
watch her). Yes, Rachel went the wrong direction. And, fleur-de-lisa,
that is the best description of Tweety, a blathering idiot.
A news media needs to hire these newscasters and give us the
intelligence we desire.

(210 posts)After they did Keith like that, I lost a part of my daily routine. Ed helped me deal with not having countdown every night. But then MSNBC goes and hers rid of Ed too Melissa Harris Perry was the best one left. She wasn't afraid to stir some shit. Good luck to her. I honestly feel that they held her career back. I think she'll be better off without them.

(86,920 posts)I think they renewed her contract about a month before they traded in their scruples to the point they can't even cover up their pile of poo anymore.
I didn't see RMS last night but I think Rachel is pissed, she seems so on her show lately and I know that she and MHP are friends as are Rachel and Chris Hayes. When they "walk" it will be just like another Fuxnooz 24/7.

(5,644 posts)They usually appear to talk about Republic0ns for the first 45 minutes of the show and then when they can get to it....Democrats.

gone to their site to watch the past few months the scripting has been obvious and her makeup isn't hiding the stress anymore. I think that she's getting ready to leap anyway but may be waiting to be pushed out of the soaring plane... maybe some lawsuits are in the works over contract issues.
I can't imagine Rachel actually selling out, I think she's preparing a place to land for when she finally leaps. She helped build the short-lived brand the network had for a spell, she's got a lot of skin in that game and may be staying to keep from getting burned or maybe as a thorn in the side.

They had John Lewis on last night early in the show, and she was asking about his comments regarding not seeing Bernie back in the 60's. I was literally sitting up getting ready for her to ask how he could have met the Clintons back then when he wrote in his book that he didn't meet them until much later. Then she threw some softball stupid question and I had to scream at the TV.
All hopes for any MSM reporting died last night.

(8,409 posts)I haven't had cable TV for years, but I would watch her show online. Then, MSNBC changed their website so that in order to watch any of their shows in full, you had to either have a cable account, or your ISP had to be a company that provided cable service. At the time, my ISP was Clear. Clear was eventually bought out by Sprint, and last fall, they ceased offering Clear's satellite Internet service. So I wound up getting an internet-only account through Time-Warner. I was then able, once again, to watch RM (which I had previously watched religiously). And to my immense disappointment, it was no longer the show I had once known and loved. A real shame.

(4,458 posts)it just took awhile for the reality to set in, imo.
A fatal diagnosis:
1980's Reagan began with the Fairness Doctrine - and
1990's Clinton finished it off with signing the Telecommunications Act into law.

(24,411 posts)Who is their target audience now? Who will watch this slop?
Republicans view MSNBC as a liberal outlet. They won't touch it. They've got Fox News.
Progressives are done. That was their base audience. The owners may have wanted to stop touting and leveraging progressive voices, but they've alienated their base of ad revenues.
Nearly all of us are gone.
Bottom line--MSNBC exists to make money. How are they going to do that?

(5,275 posts)Ed got axed because he railed against the dreadful TPP...Griffin told them all not to go there.
That made me ponder what was up with Rachel, Chris, and Lawrence..my opinion of them took a hit because they would not go near the TPP, they seemingly toed the corporate line.
It is sad but with the Internet you can find real progressive talk easily and more and more are doing that, especially the younger folks. I dumped MSNBC some time ago, I watch Cenk, Ed, Thom Hartmann, Ring Of Fire, etc right on my TVs through my WiFi enabled Blu Ray players.
That is a burgeoning nightmare for the Ruling Class.
snowy owl
(2,145 posts)I think the ruling class is doing quite well. And Rachel doesn't seem to mind. She's been okay not talking about net neutrality or giving Bernie is due for quite a long time now. I think she likes her paycheck although it seems to me their numbers are going down...I wonder what effect that will have.

(23,191 posts)Lo, it's coming to pass, gee what a surprise (NOT). I listen a few minutes to Morning Schmoe to catch the temperature for the other side. I rarely last more than 5 minutes unless Eugene Robinson is on. Otherwise, I only listen at night to Rachel and then maybe 1-2 times per month. I used to watch them almost non-stop until they betrayed us. There is no liberal press in America.
was predicted as soon as Comcast acquired MSNBC.

(23,191 posts)and this is one. Just like it's really clear what a clusterfuck will happen if we are so unfortunate to have Trump attain the presidency. (53,235 posts)And unless you like endless sports, Jesus, shopping, and kiddieshit on tv, cable is certainly dead--or, at least, on life support. There are some entertaining shows that sneak in news, but the internet is our only hope for real information. That is, until we become the New China/New NK and they cut off most of the internet to us, too.

(22 posts)I like The Young Turks & Thom Hartmann (on his many shows) & Benjamin Dixon on Youtube !!! But maybe someone who knows how to CrowdSource or do other group funding maybe can set it up so we could all get together and put together a truly Progressive Channel that we all could chip in $1 a month or so we could watch them on cable tv? The TV generation out there needs access to a real Progressive message, instead of the extremely edited and negative view they see on Corporate TV!
droidamus2
(1,699 posts)It may be my imagination but it seems to in every Presidential election cycle MSNBC goes through this kind of purge. That let the progressive/liberals hand out until about a year before the election then they can the most liberal. In so doing they are trying to cow the remaining progressives to 'tone down' their rhetoric and fall more in line with the corporate message.

(7,142 posts)where have all of you been? I have been saying this for years.
Have you forgotten; Phil Donahue, Keith Olbermann, Cenk Uygur, Martin Brashear, Toure', Ed Schultz?
msnbc has only been liberal toward the social issues.
Ever hear of good cop bad cop? msnbc may put a liberal slant to a narrative, but the narrative is controlled by the owners, COMCAST and GE.
There is no such thing as a liberal M$M, and once they pass the TPP the internet will also fall into their hands.
Phlem
(6,323 posts)Any (which is mostly all) of corporate controlled media would support any type of liberalist social position.
Things need to change drastically for that to happen and we're not even close to drastic changes in regards to media.
We need to let go of this fantasy and focus on the things that work. Like creating a central place on the internet where liberal socialists can get together and organize.
Like creating lists, maps, and legends that point us to places that support our cause. Bernie is just one piece and you know what they say about putting all your eggs in one basket. We need more leaders like Bernie and we need to find them, promote them, and support them.
We need to be proactive and not solely rely on Bernie, we need to look past him at the long term movement.
This can't be a short run, we need to play like the other guys and set long term objectives while we deal with short term issues like getting Bernie elected.
Just my 2 cents.

(1,180 posts)Has always been run by right-wingers that will tolerate opposing voices only if it makes them money. MSNBC recently changed management and has been circling the drain. Adding Brian Williams to its election coverage was the last straw for me. I still watch RM as she still has some cred left, as evidenced by her work on the Flint water crisis.
