Long time ago the last return I filed with my ex as a couple, we had an earned income credit.

He had the check, cashed it and only gave me like 1/4th the amount because he claimed he had expenses in filing etc...

The IRS did not care and I was a single parent getting aid until I could find work and they "charged me as if I had gotten the amount that I deserved" even though I did not get it.

So flat broke, getting maybe $350 a month and most of that went to rent, they cut my check for several months. Luckily my landlord was understanding or I would have been out on the street.
