(131,457 posts)every year Thanksgiving week, listeners select faves and they play 100, with everyone's #1 choice Thanksgiving night, usually either Beethoven's 9th or Dvorak's New World.

(33,014 posts)Tonight. It was lovely. We enjoyed it a great deal.
Looks like I'm giving Thanksgiving a pass this year. Two radio stations in my city switch to Xmas music sometime in November. One of them turns it into a contest where you can bet what day and time they'll make the change.
The last few years though I've been just BSing with friends about if I had the money lying around, I would buy a radio station license and only use it at Christmas time. Then I would gather as many Christmas songs as I could - religious (though I'm an atheist), secular, modern, comedic (you never hear "I'm a Christmas Tree" by Wild Man Fischer and Doctor Demento), some foreign ones, etc. Then I would dump them into a database and write a program to "randomize" them with the extra conditions of not playing the same song by the same artist more than once a day and not playing the same song but by different artists within six hours of each other to create my station's play list. It seems like every season, both channels pick the same song to play to death - last year was all the different covers of, "Santa Baby."
I would also have a list of forbidden songs that I would not allow to be played or maybe played once in the middle of the night - these would include Christmas Shoes, Baby It's Cold Outside, anything by Pentatonix (Leonard Cohen's, "Hallelujah," is NOT an Xmas song), anything by Michael Buble. It would be glorious.

(9,282 posts)Before I retired my office radio played a station that switched to holiday music in early November (ugh) and while I like a lot of it, this station played what seemed like the same 20 songs in endless rotation. And they never added any new ones over the years. (and no one should sing John Lennons Xmas song but the man himself, please!)
One of the Sirius channels plays holiday music from my childhood (60s) which I find enjoyable but its still a bit too soon for me.

(15,394 posts)As a kid we had a large multi-record album set of Christmas songs done by famous singers, and I would listen to that starting before Thanksgiving, but I can understand not jumping the gun. Oh, I was driving somewhere today and had the Xmas station on, and this "conversation" between the DJ and me happened.
DJ: You're listening to 102.1. Kansas City's Christmas Music Station. Next up is NSYNC!
Me: ... You say that like it's a good thing...
I listened to it. It was dreck. Essentially, how many Christmas words and how many Christmas traditions can we cram into a song that still somewhat rhymes.

(15,821 posts)Have a bunch of old vinyl Christmas albums and a few tapes that I'm keeping in case I ever get another system that plays cassettes. And the car radio is set to a station that plays nothing but Christmas music until after the holiday.
But then, I'm one of those known to play Christmas music whenever I need some cheering up. My neighbors would tell you that hearing "Deck the Halls" in July is not surprising.
Cheers, y'all!

like but others I just despise, Like Little Drummer Boy and Grandma got run over by a reindeer.

Well more insane than I am already anyway.
