(183,057 posts)A good starting word goes a along way. Mine didnt work well today so I had to go out on a limb.
I have noticed that the words go against normal form in that e r s t arent involved a lot.

(183,057 posts)Everyone has the same word and only one a day. We found an archive of past ones but its a great little problem solving exercise for everyone.
My wife and I joke that its not only a fantastic tracking element but someone could learn a lot about people from the data that Wordle could harvest.

(183,057 posts)My wife and I discussed this. Either words are chosen to good against the norm and/or the words just seem to have more of a Brit thing going.

I used to start with Pious and Later, then go from there, but I find it more enjoyable to throw out.whatever comes to mind. Results are wildly variable.

(86,995 posts)It took me four tries. I have spent about n hour playing the one you can keep playing and came up with a couple good starter words, at least three vowels. Someone posted that Adieu was a good one but so are:
Radio
Unite
opera
adios
And several others come up eventually.

(183,057 posts)I keep starting with audio - its more superstitious than anything.
I notice that e r s t arent as prevalent in the answers as I expect is the norm.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/31/crosswords/nyt-wordle-purchase.html"When the game moves to The New York Times, Wordle will be free to play for new and existing players, and no changes will be made to its gameplay.
Wordle was acquired for an undisclosed price in the low seven figures."
I'm glad Mr. Wardle has made money for his game that so many people are playing. I would think that running the website must have gotten expensive. This is more sustainable--and fair to Mr. Wardle.
Edited to add: The article I quoted first said it would remain free but has since been updated to say it will initially be free.
Me.
(35,454 posts)why did the NYT buy it? Do you know?

(8,213 posts)First it said it would be free but now it says that it will initially be free. So it sounds like it is indeed a way to get more people to subscribe to the NYTimes.
"Wordle was acquired from its creator, Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, for a price in the low seven figures, The Times said. The company said the game would initially remain free to new and existing players."
From the same article: The Times remains focused on becoming the essential subscription for every English-speaking person seeking to understand and engage with the world, a company statement said. New York Times Games are a key part of that strategy.
Since The Times put up a paywall in 2011, its business strategy has revolved around persuading readers and users, the overwhelming majority of whom get Times content digitally, to buy subscriptions. The traditional newspaper business model is centered on advertising.
The Times sells subscriptions to its print newspaper and core digital news app. For lower prices, it also offers subscriptions to a games app (Games), a recipe app (Cooking) and, as of last year, Wirecutter, a product-recommendation site The Times bought in 2016. This month, The Times spent $550 million to buy the sports news website The Athletic, hailing the 1.2 million subscribers the site brings with it."
