The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsThey were the hillbilly twins Ray and Roy. It was study hall in the auditorium.
My brother was born with club feet and wore braces. He was in grade seven, me in eight. When the bell rang everyone got up to go to class. Ray and Roy pointed and started laughing at my brother inching his was from his seat to the aisle. I followed the twins out and as soon as we were in the main hall I punched Ray in the face and took a swing at Roy missing. The next thing I knew I was on my back getting punched and kicked, their friend Darrell laughing at me.
Mr. Redmond broke up the fight and took us to his office. He said we had to get five whacks for fighting. Ray and Roy took theirs and left.
When my turn came I refused to bend over the desk. Mr. Redmond said I would be expelled if I didnt take my whacks. I said I didnt care so he called my mother. My mother told him she couldnt control me at home let alone at school.
I was expelled and sent to the toughest school in the district.
Darrell always walked down Indianola on his way home. After I caught up with him that day he started taking a different route.

have just let you go. Sad that happened to you. But I do admire you for sticking up for your brother. By the way, where were the teachers,or aids at?
As a retired teacher or 40 years, I believe they should have stopped it.

(1,406 posts)I know violence is not popular around here on DU. But sometimes you have to fight, and sometimes you take a bad beat for what is right and had to be done. Either by the brothers or Mr. Redmond. My dad would have told Mr. Redmond if he laid one finger on any of us, he would be in trouble. I was the baby boy with 6 older brothers. We were City Boys, and we would fight each other all day every day, but nobody messed with US.

(4,483 posts)and while this story infuriated me, I kept thinking "where the hell were the adults?" Not to keep you boys from fighting (I actually approve of this kind of violence, maybe not on school property) but to explain to everyone why your brother walked the way he did and why, therefore, his gait was not something to be made fun of. An adult should have pointed out before any of this mistreatment happened that we are all different, we all do things in different ways, and we all are doing the best we can. To make fun of someone who is doing the best he or she can is totally asinine--iow make the class understand that Ray and Roy, not your brother, were the outliers here.
I hope my son would have done exactly as you did if someone had made fun of his sister. Fortunately we lived in a fairly enlightened school district with parents who actually saw the value of their kids getting to know people who were not exactly like them.
God bless you, Floyd.
