Another Christmas memory

When we get near a holiday or a special time or event in my life I like to reminisce. That usually takes me to a more peaceful time
which is helpful in such stressful times as these. Be it political upheaval, the treatment of people racial or otherwise, the war in
Ukraine and even those of a personal situation. They can and do get to us all. With that said, here goes.

The first Christmas I can recall clearly is when I was five years old. I had asked Santa for a bike that year and my mother was pregnant with another brother of mine. Dad took mom to the hospital Christmas Eve when she had begun labor so my grandmother stayed at our home with us children. She made cookies we played some games then she put us to bed. I woke early that morning, all excited to see what Santa had brought especially a bike and though told not to go downstairs other than for the bathroom, I did.

Imagine my surprise when I first laid eyes on it, my bike! Red and silver with a bow and training wheels. Being an excited child I climbed onto it and began to pedal. Well, I rode it into the kitchen and straight into the refrigerator causing a dent and loud noise. I was not aware until that moment that dad was home and sleeping on the couch downstairs. He quickly sprung up, gave me heck and sent me back to bed. He did tell me we had a new brother and that mom was fine. My brother did dodge a bullet though. Mom wanted to name him Noel (Noelle) for Christmas but dad won out with Chris. Dad would tease mom and my brother each year by saying he chose my brothers name because there is no L in Christopher lol.

On a side note, Charlie came later, we opened our presents and had a wonderful Christmas other than missing mom. A much simpler time indeed.

Happy Holidays to all!

I had many flashbacks while reading that! I can recall many of my childhood Christmases. The earliest I can recall was when I was three, I think. Several siblings came after me so I recall the timeline of such events by who was present.

Everything that took place but I have very clear "shorts" of memory that take me back to a place and time where it's like a total recall event, but only for brief moments. I remember a sleeping bag my mom made for me when I was two and a few things from that year but there are following years where I can remember a whole bunch of details.

I enjoy reading stories of family Christmas experiences, celebrations, and traditions. It definitely seemed a more simple time growing up, but maybe because we’re the ones in charge of the magic now.

My earliest memory is sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night. I remember I heard lots of activity in the kitchen, the Christmas tree was up, decorated, and lit. The only other thing I remember briefly seeing was a present for my brother. That was my downfall. I loudly stated “Brian got that stupid old gun he wanted!” (a toy gun from the series Combat). Next thing I knew, my aunt appeared out of the kitchen to bundle me back off to bed.

Christmas Eve was always frantic. In our house, my dad was a volunteer fireman. I’d say half the time he was called to a house fire or accident on Christmas Eve. Growing up, we were told that Santa brought everything - including the tree - after we went to bed. The wrapped presents were from family, the unwrapped ones were from Santa. My spinster great aunt would spend the night. My uncle with five kids would help build whatever needed assembly, then take our presents for his family back home. Our grandmother, who lived with us, would start out the evening wrapping presents and end up putting the turkey in the oven to cook overnight. I thought my favorite aunt was always there to be around when we woke up, but as I got older, I realize a huge factor was probably because she was too exhausted!

Happy Holidays to all!
