(183,006 posts)Redford is retired as is Daniel Day Lewis.
Garry Oldman is way up there too.

(16,829 posts)Brian Cranston is great. He may not be as widely known as some of the others.
I think some of the all time best actors (Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Lawrence Olivier, Peter O'Toole, Paul Newman) are gone.
And there are some greats that didn't make the list: Michael Caine, Jack Nicholson, Gene Hackman
And I didn't include adorable but not necessarily elite actors: Brad Pitt, George Clooney

(21,934 posts)The image captures two young boys in tatty clothing playing in a street in the area to the south of the River Clyde, surrounded by the dilapidated, overcrowded housing stock.
Hardy had been sent to Glasgow by his employers, the Picture Post, a prominent photo-journalistic magazine which ran from 1938 to 1957, echoing the tone and content of Life, the long-running US publication.
Intrigued by the Gorbals unwanted reputation as being among the worst slums in all of Europe, the London-born photographer captured the decay, but also something of the citys spirit the youngsters in his frame are walking arm in arm along the long demolished Clelland Street, wearing cheery smiles.

(24,756 posts)Hoffman? Maybe the best in the breadth of roles that he played. Then you have O'Toole, Burton, and many other British actors....and what about women? Meryl Streep, Helen Miriam, Taylor,?
Just too many great actors to make this poll viable.
On edit" sorry, reread and saw it was limited to living and male.

(17,371 posts)I know you were asking the question in the sense of most skilled or convincing answer, but it made me wonder who is the highest grossing actor of all time? Whose movies made the most money in a career.
I don't believe I've ever heard that so I Googled it. Any guesses who that might be? Answer below...
Harrison Ford!
As Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan, and numerous other action heroes, Ford has made it abundantly clear that he is not an action hero to be trifled with. He has even crossed several of the actors on this list throughout the course of his career. However, Fords first major role the one that catapulted him to stardom is the one that has officially made him the highest grossing actor of all time: intergalactic badass, smuggler, and all around nerf herder Han Solo from the Star Wars saga.

He's a very good actor, and I love watching him. But I don't think of him as an elite actor.
Tom Cruise is a very good actor, for certain kinds of roles.
The British trained actors are really amazing... Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, Kenneth Branagh, Liam Neeson... I watch their films to see the performance as much as anything else.
True Dough
(17,371 posts)would have been my guess for highest grossing actor, but he hasn't been able to surpass Harrison Ford. Actually, he's #6 on that list I linked. But I he'll surely move into the top 5 before too long.
BlueTsunami2018
(3,507 posts)Probably the best of his generation.
But its really hard to define under these circumstances. Who was better in their prime? Pacino or DeNiro?
I mean, Robert Blake is still alive, his acting skills were off the chart.
Its very subjective.

(16,829 posts)Every kind of role, and he proved it with The Revenant.
Kevin Spacey is also an amazing actor - one of the best. But I can't even watch him any more. Its a shame he turned out to be lecherous.

(14,562 posts)One of the early movies I saw Gary Oldman in was the 1987 "Prick Up Your Ears"..A Joe Orton biog.
I was captivated by the performance. I have seen many other Oldman movies. More than not his performances always shine.

I picked Robert De Niro but on another day I may have chosen someone else.

(16,829 posts)I keep thinking of other great actors that might have been considered...
DeNiro is surely one of the greats, but for me Daniel Day Lewis is in a class by himself.
