I use to drive up from that side of town on my way to work. I remember the smell of Merita bread in the air, clashing with the smell of orange blossoms, back when there were still orange groves. You know, when it's that strong, the blossoms smell like urine.

I don't like Merita bread though. It always goes stale about 3 minutes after opening it. Also, my wife's ex-husband used to work there as a mechanic and made good money but quit when he found out how much child-support he'd have to pay and tried to get his duty reduced. He managed to reduce to just about zero as he never made more than a couple payments in the 26 years I've been married to her.

So we basically have a hate-on for Merita but yeah, it still does smell nice when when ya drive by at the right time.

MAD Magazine wrote something similar a few decades ago.

"Wonder Bread: if it's good bread, it's a wonder."

She considered it tasteless mush.
Mom was from Estonia, where people ate real bread, dark whole-grained rye and pumpernickel. That's what we were raised on.
