Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOk here is who is eligible in 2013 for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - who gets picked?
http://www.futurerocklegends.com/year.php?eligible_year=2013808 State
Acid Reign
Afghan Whigs
B'z
Blind Guardian
Buckwheat Zydeco
Cop Shoot Cop
Cynic
Danzig
DC Talk
De La Soul - I'd like to think NWA gets in this year but if they only pick one rap group De La Soul would be tops.
Edie Brickell
Everlast
Femme Fatale
Fugazi
Galaxie 500
Geto Boys
Gorilla Biscuits
Gwar
Henry Lee Summer
Iced Earth
Inspiral Carpets
Jeff Healey
Keith Richards - I don't think he's has an inspired solo career. Robert Plant was eligible ages ago and has done way better with a solo career and has never been nominated. BUT Richards is a Rolling Stone and that alone may get him picked.
Kevin Rowland
King's X
Kylie Minogue
L.A. Guns
L7
Leeway
Living Colour
Living In A Box
Massive Attack
Melissa Etheridge - Might happen. She's a terrific artist, can she get the votes needed?
Morrissey
Mudhoney
Nirvana - I'm surprised they didn't drop the eligibility and just put Nirvana in ages ago. #1 choice of the list
The Offspring
Pale Saints
Paula Abdul
Pestilence
Phish - If Rolling Stone Magazine does another reader's vote then Phish could show they have a massive fan base who wants them in.
The Royal Trux
Sir Mix-a-Lot - one song, even if it was a huge one like 'Baby Got Back' does not make R&RHOF material
Slick Rick
Soul II Soul
Stratovarius
Tad
Taylor Dayne
Tomoyasu Hotel
Tone Loc
Tracy Chapman
Traveling Wilburys - Although this was more of some big name artists doing a 2 albums together, the names alone could make this group a contender - Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Plus it might be the only way Jeff Lynne makes it in there even though he's a top producer, musical genius and founder of Electric Light Orchestra. All others are RRHOFers.
UGK
Underworld
Vampire Rodents
Vixen
When In Rome
Widespread Panic
Winger

(60,038 posts)My caveats - I love alternative rock (current faves Arcade Fire, The Nationals, Fleet Foxes) - Beatles (not the Stones so much) - not much for classic rock, love the Talking Heads....but more recently am in a jazz and classical phase (I oscillate through phases/genres).
Tracy Chapman - very significant
Phish - most significant jam band since the Allmans
Nirvana of course
Traveling Wilburys due to the status of its members, I suppose (I wasn't a big fan)
Morrissey maybe - status in the alternative music movement
not hall of fame material, but great music
Edie Brickell (when she was with the New Bohemians - two great releases)
Pale Saints (one of the best/most underrated Shoegazer band - In Ribbons is amazing)

(12,132 posts)Cynic, Gorilla Biscuits and Pestilence.
Prolly why they don't let me pick.
Having been a fan since pretty much their inception, it was only 2 years ago I finally got to see Pestilence live. One the best live shows ever - even though it wasn't with Martin Van Drunen on vox - that's OK though, I got to see him with both Asphyx and Hail of Bullets.
Cynic only had 1 album up until a couple years ago though so, even though they were huge influences with that one album for 2 decades of metal musicians, I doubt they were heard of outside of that community.
And Gorilla Biscuits are just plain fun.
edit to add: Fun fact re: Cynic - to make a living and stay connected to music (because death metal is very hard to pay bills with), Cynic singer and guitarist, Paul Masvidal, moved to Hollywood for a while and played sound effects for TV shows. For one, those little guitar squeal bumpers between scenes on That 70's Show where him.
Less fun, but also a fact, Paul wears those shoes with the individual toes on stage - at least, he did when I saw him with Cynic a while back.
Another edit because I must have missed him: I think Danzig should get in but not for his solo work which is boring to me but not terrible. He should get in for his work in the Misfits.

(24,461 posts)Old thrash band from Britain, most of their members merged with the great Lee Dorrian to form Cathedral. Memorable times back in the late 80s.
Yeah, you want to know what metal band I would put in to shake things up - Napalm Death. How giant was their influence on the world of modern metal? They're still going to this day despite not one original member.
I remember seeing TAD open for Primus at the Babylon A Go Go in Cleveland's Ohio City area (don't look for the club, it's no longer there). The place was so goddamned packed, if you wanted to go to the bathroom, you were missing a song and a half. Although (thanks to hookups in college radio back then) we knew about Tad's heavy sound going in, they turned a lot of heads that night.
Who gets in based ON that list? The safe bets are likely Nirvana, Phish and Morrissey (not really a fan of any of them). Surprised The Smiths aren't in already. Dark horse would be Living Colour, although they don't have much of a legacy beyond their first two albums. Pair them with a bunch of people still waiting, like Kiss, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Moody Blues and Deep Purple.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)My 4th time to see them and they were just as great as when I first saw them on the Harmony Corruption tour. I wish I could have seen them when Lee was still there - I love Barney but I would have liked a shot at a Lee Dorrian song or two...
Lee Dorrian also contributed a song to Dave Grohl's Probot project - I think it's the best one on the record.
Did you see Napalm Death got picked by SPin magazine for one of the top 20 best metal records of 2012?

(24,461 posts)Never got out to see them in the 2000s . . . which is a shame since I like their new sound.

(873 posts)The Wilburys only had two albums, so no to them.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Nirvana only had 3 and they'll get in.
If Wilburys get in it will be due to the members of the band, 4 of which are in the HOF already and one who probably should be.
Dr. Strange
(25,929 posts)BainsBane
(53,137 posts)as a grave omission, as Rush was until this year. There are plenty of bands long eligible that haven't been inducted.
Melissa Etheridge should definitely be in there. I personally will take out anyone who nominates Paul Abdul. Obviously Nirvana should be in.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Sure they had a few hits back in the late 60s but not seeing why that should put them in the R&RHOF. Rush not only has been putting out great albums since the 70s but they are still putting out great albums.
If Deep Purple toured today they'd maybe fill up a medium size venue that holds 3k-5k people. Rush still tours the larger arenas, they had a near sell out at Wells Fargo just a month ago.
People say that DP was one of the bands that helped build up Hard Rock/Heavy metal but personally I find them 2nd rate compared to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
BainsBane
(53,137 posts)but I know many inductees have complained about it.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)not a big club at all but it was a fun show.
Geddy mentioned in a recent interview that he thought DP should be in the Hall of Fame for sure.

(46,416 posts)I don't know that it matters how long the career was. Lots of influential artists had lives and careers cut short for various reasons.
Tobin S.
(10,418 posts)No to the rest on the list. I know ELO isn't on the list but they should be.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Kinda why I am pulling for Travelling Wilburys - at least then Jeff Lynne would be in there!

(21,786 posts)Brilliant fusion of US hip-hop with Jamaican dub and UK electronic elements that single-handedly created a genre and pretty much defined the musical sound of the 1990's. "Blue Lines" is easily one of the most influential albums ever.

(6,785 posts)Gwar or L7 just to be a pain in the ass.
Better than Phish, Widespread Panic, or Winger.
The one I see that I'd most like to see in the hall of fame is Living Colour.
Hippo_Tron
(25,453 posts)Journey, Foreigner, Boston, or Styx.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)If they have to induct one...let it be Journey. Otherwise, keep them all out.
Hippo_Tron
(25,453 posts)In the cases of Styx and Journey, each band had points where they had two lead singers. I don't give a rats ass that people deem them "corporate rock" or think their lyrics are cheezeball. The voice is an instrument and singing is a craft. The fact that people don't appreciate the notes that a singer hits in the same way that they appreciate a great guitar solo. Try going to a karaoke bar and singing a Steve Perry song in the right octave. Most likely (unless you're a really gifted singer) it will sound a lot like a mediocre guitarist picking up an axe and trying to play like Eddie Van Halen.
LTR
(13,227 posts)Just so Tom Scholz can tell all of them how completely fucked they all are.
But let's be real, he probably wouldn't show up. I don't think they'd get in anyways. Not sure what the rock critics establishment would do with a guy who spent six years in his basement perfecting a cover of "Louie Louie".
Hippo_Tron
(25,453 posts)I always say that Tom Scholz is the reason I like Boston. Brad Delp is the reason I LOVE Boston. The second I heard those epic high notes on More Than A Feeling is when I decided that I wanted to be a singer. Delp was one of the finest vocalists there is.
But yea, you're right Scholz probably wouldn't show up. It's also interesting to consider who they would actually induct. Scholz and Delp were technically the only ones signed to the label. So do they just induct those two, or Barry Goudreau, Sib Hashian, and some others as well.

(10,000 posts)I'm not a fan, but the induction of Nirvana is a bet-the-ranch-stone-cold-lock.
With the caveat that one of the perpetual bridesmaids may finally get picked (KISS, Foreigner, Deep Purple, et. al.), my other guesses are:
Traveling Wilburys
Tracy Chapman
Morrisey
Melissa Etheridge
On edit: I'm going t guess Phish waits 1-2 years. Don't ask me why - just a hunch.

(23,340 posts)I like Buckwheat, but ... and ate gumbo with him and his band ....
is Clifton Chenier, the very king of zydeco in? What about Beausoliel, on the Cajun side of things?
This hall of fame of rock does little justice to the non-rock areas of popular music including anything non-white and non-rock.
It is really a farce as an institution. It is the old white boomer version of what important music is.
Avalux
(35,015 posts)Should happen because they had such a unique sound and others copy it now, but it probably won't. One of my top 10 bands of all time.

I never did care. Whole thing seems so UN-rock and rollish to me.
BainsBane
(53,137 posts)They seem to have no concern about whether the inductees are rock musicians.
LTR
(13,227 posts)And can mean many things. Lots of genres branched off from there. Even Miles Davis got in.

(53,137 posts)A couple of months ago, I was on the bus coming home from the university where I work. A couple of students were sitting behind me. They seemed to be on a first date, or just getting to know each other. The boy asked the girl what kind of music she liked, and she said she didn't like rock. I thought I had misheard her. I mean, how can you not like rock? What does that even mean? I thought, am I so old I don't even know how young people talk any more? But the boy was equally incredulous. He said, that's a pretty broad term that encompasses a lot of music. . . . I went back to reading my book.

(53,137 posts)That sums it up.
LTR
(13,227 posts)The others will be holdovers. I'm guessing NWA (Public Enemy beat them for the rap slot this year), Kiss (yeah, you heard me - they need another headline grabber), Kraftwerk (they deserve it just for being so influential) . For forgotten geezers, either Deep Purple or Yes. And why isnt ELO in? Oh, and when the hell is Stevie Ray Vaughn getting in?
For early influence, I'd like to see jump blues legend Wynonie Harris finally get in.
Still hoping for that joint Joy Division/New Order selection.
Nonetheless, I know the RRHOF is all bullshit. It's a clique.
OmahaBlueDog

(10,000 posts)Both were beloved by the community of 70s/80s musicians, and both were very influential. Neither of them, however, has a mainstream mega-hit to its name.
I contend, however, that if they let in Iggy & The Stooges and The Ramones, the RRHoF should let in Little Feat & Roxy Music.

(33,688 posts)Living Color, Nirvana and Phish.
Still waiting for King Crimson, Deep Purple, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Ven Der Graaf Generator, and the German masters of improvisation/prog/general boundary-breaking - Can. Like that will ever happen.
ETA: Roxy Music.

(19,768 posts)They're not rock and roll.
And I'd go with ELO like some upthread.
Also, this list reminds me I need to listen to some Iced Earth!!!

(5,604 posts)Just saying. For what its worth, most of the eligible inductees have less talent than me. Except for Gwar of course. And Jeff Healey. But then again being talented and being popular usually have little to do with one another.
