and then anchored to the wall in at least two places before a single light or ornament was hung. It was guaranteed that at least once a day the cat would claw her way to the very top and peer put from the branches like she had just conquered Everest.

. . .for sleeping under.
There was this blue spruce tree in front of our house that the cat would hide under. A couple of times, we had birds building nests and raising chicks. The cat didn't bother them; couldn't reach them if it tried anyway.
The cat(s) loved the Christmas trees because for them it was like having the spruce tree INSIDE the house, for a change.
