The DU Lounge

This would be an inset of 3' wide by 2 in a ceramic tile porch floor. I'm Googling, am doing my own due dilegence, but Lounge is always a resource not to be overlooked.
So it would be sort of like a Welcome mat format, probably the family surname in 6" letters. With or without a border. The mosaic pieces, what, are they available at home DIY stores? How do the (square?) pieces make curved letters? Instead of "ask me anything," I'm asking YOU everything, from scratch!1 Is the (cement?) the same as for ceramic tile? There will be WALKING on it, so are the pieces going to chip out?

(68,644 posts)You can either use small square or round mosaic tiles to "build" each letter (think block letters) or find single letter square tiles, like these:
I don't know how long your surname is, so it's hard to say what will fit the space you have.
Also, tile uses grout, a mixture of sand and cement, not unlike mortar only with finer particles of sand.
Done correctly, it should last for years.
You'll want to use a "thickset" method, which involves a thick bed of mortar, much more stable, like what you'd find in the bathroom of a good home from the 20's.
It's still done today, but not in cheap construction.
