Dave and his wife live in a condo complex in Northern Virginia. They also own a dog. Now, because of new a rule by his condo association, they and anyone else who owns a dog has 30 days to provide a DNA sample of their canine companion.
According to the letter Dave received from his condo association [emphasis is ours]:
As part of the registration process, dog owners must pay a registration fee to be determined by the Board of Directors, and which may vary from time to time as necessary. The Association will use these fees to defray the costs of enforcement of this policy and the rectification of damages and wear and tear caused by dogs within the community. The Association will provide each dog owner with a kit designed for the purpose of taking a DNA sample of the dog for identification purposes. Dog owners are required to obtain and use the kit to take the DNA sample in the clubhouse in the presence of the On-Site Manager. The Association will forward those samples to a special company for storage and, if necessary, further testing.
So not only are they requiring condo owners to register their dogs. The association also doesn't trust dog-owning residents to take the DNA sample on their own, lest you provide them with DNA from your goldfish.

(102,465 posts)It cost me a fortune, just to move, as they try to charge you for everything-- a few extra bags of garbage? A $$ fee. Want to move some boxes yourself, before the major move? They try to charge a "moving fee" for every time you move a box or a chair and use the "loading parking spaces"... And, once your high priced movers come? You can make sure they will make things so difficult and delay your movers so much, that your moving fees will surely be doubled.
I can not believe what I put up with from this despicable group--which were fine when i originally purchased my condo, but became truly fascist as a certain "clique" took over. That I waited so long to move out is solely because I so dreaded the fights incurred with moving out. But, a lesson for anyone moving to a house, condo, townhome with HOA associations. Read the fine print, research the history of complaints, talk to a lawyer if you are not sure. Remember, the smiling HOA member that reassures you on day 1, may be nothing like those who take over in years to come.
Mine's not that bad. But some of the people are horrendous busybodies.

(102,465 posts)Dog owners that don't pooper scoop deserve to be chastised, fined, whatever. But, it takes little imagination to consider how many ways this can be abused.
First of all, there is no way to remove all DNA evidence from the area of defecation, no matter how carefully one removes the waste--so a neighbor with "issues" could readily manipulate this fact. Ditto, urination. Not to mention the fact that dogs will not infrequently defecate or urinate in areas where other dogs may have "marked" earlier--so whose DNA is really being tested? Without documented "chain of custody" by those with some kind of basic training and authority, what damned civil court would allow this kind of idiocy? And, since this would likely be small claims court, there is little reason that most dog owners should NOT fight it--rigorously. Of course there will be expense incurred for all that testing. Perhaps that is really the point? Perhaps someone has a financial interest in all of this ridiculous testing?
Go after the louses that fail to be responsible, sure, but let them take cell phone video--or some other evidence, for heavens sake. And maybe start with a few warnings?
Gawd, how common sense has surely ended in our society...

(5,909 posts)It has a pineapple on the top. All of the houses in our neighborhood have the same mailbox. For some reason, my husband painted the pineapple green...I know weird, but whatever. We get a letter saying it must be painted black or we will be fined monthly with interest. Yet people's yards look like shit who are on the stupid association.
Yes, he did paint the dumb (hospitality!) pineapple black.

(12,272 posts)But just working with the agent telling us what color we could paint it and wanting to get me to decorate in my mind with her . . .Gaaaa. We now live in a hodgepodge neighborhood and are quite happy with our often colorful and nonconformist neighbors.

(5,909 posts)All there are in the area of GA where I live are subdivisions with cookie cutter houses. I'm from New England, and my husband's company had to fly me down twice because I had such a hard time finding a house. We were living in a house on 3 acres, and I couldn't believe how close together the houses were on such a small amount of land.
We ended up in a nice house with a private backyard, and I will say subdivision life is good for kids...my kids have lots of friends within walking distance, but I want to move back to New England so much.
