(03-22) 12:02 PDT SANTA CRUZ -- Santa Cruz County animal control officers are looking for the owner of an 8-month-old tabby kitten who apparently climbed into a van's engine compartment in Mill Valley and hitched a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge before mewing for his life in Santa Cruz.
The van's driver heard the kitten meowing at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when he stopped at an Ocean Street gas station.
"He got out to get gas and he heard mewing under the hood and there was this 8-month-old kitten just sitting there," said Melanie Sobel, general manager of the county animal shelter.
The female kitten, who was wearing a studded leather collar and a blue bell, had nary a scratch after the 85-mile trip, Sobel said.
