(3,569 posts)One of the songs they stopped playing for a long time then busted out later in the trip. Love it.

(3,569 posts)Such a mournful song. When Robert Hunter was once asked "Did you ever write thinking about Jerry's death?" and he replied "every word". This one is one of them time stands still songs that hints at a universal truth.
All of my friends come to see me last night
I was laying in my bed and dying
Annie Beauneu from Saint Angel (note 1)
Say "the weather down here so fine"
Just then the wind came squalling through the door (note 2)
But who can the weather command
Just want to have a little peace to die
And a friend or two I love at hand
Fever roll up to a hundred and five
Roll on up, gonna roll back down
One more day I find myself alive
Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground
See here how everything
Lead up to this day
And it's just like any other day
That's ever been
Sun going up and then
The sun going down
Shine through my window
And my friends they come around
Come around, come around
The people might know, but the people don't care
That a man can be as poor as me (note 3)
Take a look at poor Peter, he's lying in pain
Now let's come run and see
Run and see
Run and see
Run, run and see, and see

(3,569 posts)a great latter era song. Also, this version is the last song the band played with Jerry garcia.
This song became a crowd favorite, quickly. Incredible Hunter lyrics here.....That's the thing, the Dead never favored a song much or had a favorite era, any song was game. And we loved the new songs. Some took some time to get used to, some fell out right away, some never got that much time and others became anthems. And they kept on creating vital music until Jerry passed. Standing on the Moon is as good as anything they ever did, So is this song. and so is whatever tune you want.
When the last rose of summer pricks my fingers
And the hot sun chills me to the bone
When I can't hear the song for the singer
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And sing me a song of my own
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
Sing me a song of my own
When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain
And the stars seem to splatter in the sky
When the moon splits the south west horizon
And scream of an eagle on the fly
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And listen to the ripples as they moan
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
Sing me a song of my own
Black muddy river
Roll on forever
I don't care how deep and wide
If you got another side
Roll muddy river
Roll muddy river
Black muddy river, roll
When it seems like the night will last forever
And there's nothing left to do but count the years
When the strings of my heart start to sever
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And dream me a dream of my own
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
Sing me a song of my own
And sing me a song of my own

Seriously though, this thread is full of win, even if I hadn't contributed.

Poppet = huge Kate fan. A dear friend of mine and his husband got to go to London for one of the residency shows (brought me back an awesome souvenir). I didn't get lucky trying to score a ticket.

I have never seen her in concert, but I would pay dearly to do so!

I know for a fact why she can put up a full concert without pay.
It is because you will see her in concert. Every concert is a beautiful experience .. Under the Pink in the Orpheum in New Orleans was the best.
