Our version was quite different. The biggest thing was I didn't play guitar on it, even though it's a 2 guitar song.
I used a Fender-Rhodes sound and did 5 tone chords to jazz it up some.
We doubled the second verse and while the guitar player was singing it, (with no guitar being played) I just hit random notes & clusters. Made it weird & dark.
Then, when he sang "Fire" for the call, the three of us sang harmonies that crossed for the response, resolving into a minor 6th chord. Think Manhattan Transfer singing REM.
We probably did this song for close to 10 years.
