Carriage houses are outbuildings to a larger primary residence and were orginally used to store horse-drawn carriages. Sometimes a coachman or caretaker lived on the upper floor. I live in a modest carriage house.

Mine was converted to a full-fledged house, though. I'm sitting in the actual carriage house part right now, typing this.

Mine has two wings that were put on it and it has two stories. In one wing I have a utility room, kitchen, butler's pantry, and an office.

In the other wing I have a bedroom, bath, and back hallway. There are two staircases leading up to the second floor, one on each end of the house.

I added a greenhouse to the side of my office. Also a full back deck that spans the length of the house. The whole back and side areas are enclosed with a bamboo forest.

Love carriage houses. There are lots of them around here because the place is loaded with big old mansions, many of which are historical. My town has a lot of interesting history. Thomas Edison's mansion is less than half a mile down the hill.

I love the pic in your OP. I especially like the roof and the ivy covered stone entrance structures.

The second floor of my house has a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/living room. The first floor has a garage, laundry and a utility room. The bedroom opens onto a back deck which overlooks a small yard with surrounding flower beds, which I call "the garden." My neighbor's bamboo forest borders the eastern side of the yard.

My city has a long and rich history. Lancaster, PA, was founded in 1729 and served as the temporary capital of the US for one day in 1777, after the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia when it was captured by the British. Thaddeus Stevens, the famously fierce abolitionist and a US House Representative during the Civil War period, called Lancaster home, as did our second-worst president, James Buchanan.

Thanks!

Your carriage house setup sounds lovely, too, with the back deck, garden, and a bamboo forest, too.

do you ever shop at that Central Market, I think it's called. It's like a big farmer's market.
