(14,559 posts)horse mane, rider hair, facial expression on both horse and rider and then brought it all together with the matching body language.
Only way to improve it would be an arena with clean background and performance outfit for the rider.
Had a buddy that made a nice added income by shooting these at rodeos.

(5,420 posts)Your buddy must've been a good shooter.
I wasn't supposed to be there that day - heard about the competition and just wanted to see if I could get some good pictures.

(14,559 posts)I'd shoot a hundred or so exposures of each ride in an event like this. Ya might want to explore the capture mode. It starts buffering shots as soon as you lock focus and stores 15-25 shots BEFORE you actually make an exposure. It's a freakin time machine. Miss the timing on the perfect shot? No more.

(5,420 posts)I've read about capture mode. I don't, however, shoot barrel racing anymore. This was a one-time opportunity years ago using my old Nikon D2Xs and a D300.
Now if I had a 400 mm lens the capture mode would probably work well with birds in flight. How capture works seems just amazing, like you say, a freakin time machine.

(5,420 posts)It's called Pro Capture. I shoot Olympus now myself; I do not know if Nikon offers anything like it. It looks like you have a very nice set-up, long reach with that lens. Do you have any photos to post?

(12,467 posts)I forwarded a photo to someone who entered it on one of the photo contests. My photo came in D.U. third place.... not bad.
That must have been 10 years ago.

Thanks soothsayer. It was a blast "shooting" the gals and their well-trained horses.

(484 posts)The bottom picture is the money shot, imo. Both profiles almost identical, the sense of speed gathering, both looking toward to the next barrel and gathering themselves for the run.
