More/Latest: Part of Key Bridge in Baltimore collapses after large boat collision, vehicles submerged.

A portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, has collapsed after a large container boat collided with it early Tuesday morning.

Reports came in around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday that a large vessel crashed into the bridge carrying north and southbound lanes of Interstate 695, catching on fire before causing multiple vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below.

At least seven vehicles have collapsed into the water, Baltimore City Fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright confirmed with WTOP.

It’s a ship!

A container ship is huge and has a tremendous mass. If it was fully loaded it would be even more massive.

Ships like this take up to ten miles to stop from their cruising speed. They are very difficult to control.

What’s the difference between a boat and a ship? A merchant marine once told me it’s simple: you can put a boat on a ship but not the other way.

ZACLY, known this for many years: you can put a boat on a ship but not the other way.

P.S., 39 degrees HERE, 'mostly clear.'
