Texas Tech plans for new veterinary school now "on pause"

Texas Tech has hit the brakes on its plans to build a veterinary school in Amarillo.

System spokesman Brett Ashworth said Wednesday the veterinary school has been placed “on pause.” Ashworth declined to elaborate, also telling A-J Media later that Tech wasn’t ready to discuss when it may again pursue the project. But he said the decision was made by Tech system Chancellor Robert Duncan.

The news comes just weeks before the 2017 Texas Legislature meets, when Tech leaders had planned to ask for funding to build the school. The pause throws into question the future of a project that has received significant support from Amarillo city government and local state representatives.

Tech executives traveled to Amarillo earlier this year to voice acceptance of a $15 million incentive offered by the Amarillo Economic Development Corp. and approved by the City Council. Under proposed terms of the incentive agreement, Tech was to begin construction of the veterinary school by September 2018 and pay at least $50 million in payroll and benefits to employees.
