Greg Abbott thinks Trump will ease fiscal burdens on Texas
Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday that a Trump administration might help ease the states budget crunch by fulfilling federal responsibilities to secure the border, giving the state greater flexibility in administering Medicaid and saving Texas the cost of constantly suing the federal government to fight what state officials consider intrusive executive actions and regulations.
Abbott said a Republican in the White House might enable the Legislature to better navigate what promises to be a leaner budget because of depressed oil and gas prices leading to decreases in revenue from fossil fuel production taxes and sales taxes part of what he characterized as the longstanding ebb and flow of the states energy economy.
What we all know is that every decade weve had some tight budgets and some flush budgets, Abbott said, speaking with about a dozen reporters for an hour. What we know is that through every tight budget that weve had in the past, the sun has still risen after that session, and its not a miracle. Its just life.
Abbott said cutting taxes remains central to his agenda for the session and my first choice in a tax cut would be the franchise and margins tax on businesses.
