Virginia sales tax holiday set for this weekend

Getting kids ready to go back to school and preparing for hurricane season have something in common: Both are tax exempt this weekend. ... Virginians will be able to buy back-to-school supplies, hurricane and winter preparedness supplies and energy-efficient appliances tax-free beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continuing through 11:59 p.m. Sunday during the states annual sales tax holiday. ... The General Assembly merged three different tax holidays into one back in 2015.
The 5.3 percent state sales tax will not be charged for items such as generators, chain saws, clothing, shoes, pens, crayons and Energy Star and WaterSense appliances.
Ice packs, most batteries portable radios and weather band radios, bungee cords, rope, ratchet straps and duct tape are among survival items that are tax-free this weekend.
Most clothes are also tax exempt for the weekend, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation. Clothing accessories, such as sunglasses, jewelry and handbags, still will be taxed.
