PCC adds $4 hazard pay in all stores across Puget Sound after Seattle ordinance
PCC Community Markets is giving all of its hourly employees an extra $4 per hour throughout the coronavirus pandemic after Seattle last month passed legislation requiring large grocery stores in the city to give their employees hazard pay.
The decision to expand hazard pay across all of its stores came after PCC originally came out against Seattle's legislation and urged Mayor Jenny Durkan to reconsider signing the ordinance, saying the store had put into place a number of measures to keep employees safe. At the time, PCC argued the city should focus instead on vaccinating essential workers and warned of the negative impacts the ordinance could have on the slim profit margin it operates under.
This week, PCC reached an agreement with UFCW 21, the union representing grocery store workers in the region, to expand hazard pay across all of its stores in the Puget Sound and to put into place a curbside pickup program for the future.
We prioritize our staff, and this week was no exception. We appreciate the UFCW Local 21s partnership and are pleased we could come to terms on our offer to provide hazard pay across the co-op, PCC CEO and President Suzy Monford said in a statement. The addition of curbside will help the co-op grow and sustain jobs, while also providing a safe, contact-less, modernized option for members and shoppers.
