LTE: Smiley doesn't understand the job
The ad campaign for Tiffany Smiley ignores simple truths about the office of U.S. senator. Obviously: Smiley will not be on local streets battling the homeless and drug addicted, opening up closed businesses and shielding innocents from criminals, as her ads imply. She never addresses how she plans to clean up our streets and reduce crime, since local lawmakers and police already have that unenviable job. And, she takes more advantage of voter ignorance in asserting that she will end inflation — single handedly — overnight.
Senators have no direct control over these issues. Constitutionally, they are tasked with setting policy, budgets and making laws that affect us nation-wide. Her willful ignorance of this fact is alarming. Noticeably, she does not address the more important issues that senators do control: Immigration, gun control, voting rights, infrastructure and the funding of entitlements, to name a few.
Being elected to congressional office and governing well requires more than incendiary and mis-leading slogans, ageism, and shocking imagery. Given the smoke and mirrors of this campaign, it is reasonable to expect that if elected, Smiley will be collecting a comfortable six-figure income, vote 100 percent with the party and its donors, and be dining well with those who paid to put her in office.
